Question-Highway Convoy in Missouri
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Question-Highway Convoy in Missouri

While we were driving home from Colorado, we passed by a couple of military convoys driving on the highway. For the one heading east, I noted that the vehicles (Humvees) had the notations "218 BDE" and "2/137-1" on the rear bumper. Can any of you guys translate that for me, I'm not very well up on that part of military terminology, and I'm kinda curious what it means. Thanks Smile

218 BDE should mean 218th Brigade,

2/137-1 is 2nd Battalion of the 137th regiment. Are you sure that last digit isn't an "I" instead of a "1" ? That indicates the type of unit, "I" for infantry, FA for Artillery, EN engineer, a triangle for Armor etc. Also, if there was a dash it would be a separate Battalion, a slash indicates one of many under a regimental HQ's, which doesn't make sense since supposedly under a Brigade (218th) based on those markings. Although units have been known to dork up their bumper numbers before, not that I have any experience with that Rolling Eyes .

A well used bumper # stencil tends to make an 'I' look like a '1'......or perhaps they ran out of 'I's linking the metal stencils together and used a '1'.....

Been there, done that. (Still cleaning bumper # paint out from under my finger nails... Wink )

Regards
Don

I forgot to add (because I wasn't sure of the importance) that all the vehicles had "HQ ###" markings as well. Thanks for the info, too! Smile

Try Kansas National Guard. 218 BDE. may be hq'd out of S.C., but the 2/137 INF is a KSARNG unit.
