Improvized Armoured Vehicles
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

dsc09583b5.jpg and 3248870282_43ee33fafa_b.jpg

look like armored farm tractors (different sized front and rear wheels and a central operators position). Looking at the similarity it looks like they were done in a factory as part of a standardized production run not as an improvised homebrew

Post subject: Re:Improvised Armoury Vehicles and the Yugoslav civil war

Karlovac is south of Zagreb towards Bihac. It is the closest the Serb armies got to the Croatian capitol during the war. Although there were Jugoslav National Army (JNA) barracks throughout Croatia before the war, most were evacuated or overrun early on. The exterior displays in Karlovac are representative of the sort of vehicles the Croat armies had available. The Slovenians separated earlier than the Croats, and were able to capture (keep) fairly large JNA arsenals and warehouses.

In very stereotypical terms, the Croats were the intellectuals, the Serbs the militarists and industrialists, and the Bosnians the labourers. The Croats had limited military resources, but they safeguarded what they had and they chose how to resume the fight. The Serbs had the 3rd line depots and manufacturing plants. Their armies were always better mechanized but smaller. The Bosnians had neither weapons or exceptional leadership. They did have somewhat larger populations to recruit from, and therefore more personnel. They had even less armour than the other sides.

The Croats declared independance and a few days later the Serb dominated Jugoslav government tried to recapture Croatia. When the war stalemated to fixed lines, all sides fought with light infantry and reservists, irregulars (ie. thugs and terrorists) and standoff weapons. The improvized vehicles were built for local defences, and sometimes built inside surrounded enclaves.

In summer 1995, in Operation Storm, the Croats pushed the Serbs much further back than before. This is the general border between Bosnia and Republika Srpksa, also known as the IEBL. Those Croat mechanized forces included conventional AFVs and tanks.

To get back to the Croatian vehicle's

The vehicle's in picture 4 and 6 (dsc09583b5.jpg and 3248870282_43ee33fafa_b.jpg) are basicly the same

They are not real improvised AFV because of the number build and they where ordered by the Croatian goverment

In total 17 of these vehicle's have been build (1991-10 and 1991-12 16 + 1 in 1992-07)
The vehicle's where build at the Croatian Torpedo tractor factory and are based on standard front loader tractors
Torpedo was building German Deutz tractors in license

Armor plating consisted of 12-15mm naval quality steel, making total weight about 9.5ton

Different type's of weapons could be carried, most used where heavy machine guns

The last vehicle was delivered to the Croatian Special forces
All of the vehicle's have been redrawn from service

Base of information: Croatian Improvised AFV's 1991-1995 a pictorial history

Will try to figure out the remaining

Michel
