MRAP Nomenclature
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Does this MRAP have an "M" number? All I can find is it's called 'Maxx Pro'.

Post subject: Re: MRAP Nomenclature

AFAIK, none of the MRAPs have ever been officially "type classified" - which confers the M-series designation. I believe this is due to the fact that they were bought & paid for under supplemental funding, and not through the normal program of record method. This may change as more of the programs that were funded under supplementals are moved under the normal DoD budget, and MRAPs become part of normal, peacetime TO&Es and training establishments.

The basic types (of actual fielded vehicles, not the ones that were just evaluated) are:

BAE Caiman (6x6) and Caiman Light (4x4) (based on FMTV chassis)
BAE RG-31 (South African design)
BAE RG-33 (South African design)
Force Protection Cougar (most common Marine Corps vehicle)
Force Protection Buffalo (EOD specialized)
Navistar International MaxxPro & MaxxPro Dash (most common Army vehicle)

Other vehicles evaluated, such as a variant of Textron's M1117, the Oshkosh/PVI Alpha, Oshkosh/Thales Australia Bushmaster, PVI Golan, etc were not selected...

In addition to these there's the new Oshkosh MRAP All-Terrain Vehicle (M-ATV).

And JLTV, which is also a different animal

Mark,

That's a MaxxPro Plus (dualies on the rear axle).

Most of the models in Neil's list have several variants (CAT I, CAT II, engineer variants, EOD vehciles, ambulances, add-on armor variants, etc.). Like HMMWVs and FMTVs, it's getting hard to keep track of all the different kinds of MRAPs.
