Took these Friday,

M47 SN 499

MTLB

The MTLB serial number box was visible on the front but someone deliberately ground the numbers off.

M59

M103A2 SN 773

M42 SN 1253

I got the SN from the inside and then compared it to the "MWO Plate" welded to the rear. Here are the images.

MWO Plate

The Data plate was removed but the SN was stamped in. I guess it answers which number on the MWO plate is the SN for M42's and maybe M41's

On the M42, it looks like the inside stamping is 1983 ???

But when I crawled in and checked it looked like 1253 before I took the picture.

I guess next time (?) I'll sand the number to make sure.

So based on this number, 1983 , we can assume the MWO plate numbers are not Serial Numbers ???

Actually, the SN is at the _bottom_ of those MWO plates if I remember correctly.

According to the TM the MWO plate has both the manufacturer's build number and the Ordnance serial number. I have only seen serial-like numbers at the top. On many vehicles there are no other numbers or stampings.
