VMMV Open Houses
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Gee it takes so much effort to have a field full of rusting vehicles, Try keeping a 100 vehicles in operational order and putting on an open house that takes 4 to 6 weeks of work and pay for it all out of your own pocket. it is so nice to have such support for the museum and volunteer staff that have put on over a dozen open houses in the past 15 years.

Marc

I'm very well versed in such functions.

It takes months of planning, a volunteer 'corps' dedicating hundreds of 'man-hours', and then the 20-50 year old vehicles must run to insure a quality production.

Unfortunately some little detail gets overlooked, memo doesn't get forwarded or signed, or some other 'behind the scene foul up',.... and an event has to be cancelled.

There is little understanding in the publics view, and persumptions are made.

Hopefully your institution will be able to reschedule another event in the near future. Good luck

Hopefully, I'll be able to actually attend one of the events 'ya'll' put on. My track record for 'roadtrips' leaves a lot to be desired. A fact I am currently attempting to correct.

Regards,
Don

Marc,
I really do appreciate what ya'll do keeping all the vehicles going - but frankly if no one gets to see them?... Is the mission to preserve military vehicles so they can be seen by the public? Isnt that what a museum does? I mean if you had vehicles on static display other times of the year that would be one thing... BTW I defend VMMV a lot to some on this board and my own friends - I believe both VMMV and the Ordnance Museum have their merits. Heck, I've even helped out on a volunteer day. But when you cant find one day out 365 to open the doors of a museum to the public... Well that makes it a bit harder...

BTW, you must not have been to Aberdeen in a while or seen the pictures... Yes there are still plenty of rusting vehicles. But there are also a good & increasing number of vehicles that have received a lot of hard work from the museum restoration staff and put back on display - and they can be seen year-round...

Frankly I'd like to see more vehicles at the Ordnance Museum better preserved and VMMV open more days of the year...

I can support that statement, and some of the evidence of it can be seen here:

I really think we are being judged by the fact that we put on open house. we have many groups and individuals come through our facility all year round. the only time we are "closed to the Public" is when we are not at the facility. we avoid advertising public hours so we can get restoration work done, but are open to tours all year round. Smile

As for the restoration work at aberdeen, Jack has taken me around the restoration facility, i am glad it is being done, i am sad the some vehicles are being put back outside, our central east coast weather is not good for restored vehicles, you can almost hear them rust.

Here's the best I have.

In all the years I have been going I have not seen it outside.
