"Operation Big Lift" 1963
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Two questions here. The M88 appears to belong to the 2nd Armored Division however the soldiers are wearing 7th Army patches. What's up with that? Both vehicles have "BCJ" on them. Anyone know what that means? BIGGER IMAGE

Heres an idea.....

2AD (fwd) was stationed in Germany. Perhaps 7th Army personnel are inprocessing new equipment from 2nd AD units.

The tanks gun tube looks new.

Just a thought

IIRC unless they were Division size or larger, they would wear the Army patch,

14th ACR (11th ACR predecessor) wore it instead of the regimental patch, Most likely these are 2 AD forward and the same applies.

I wonder when that practice changed. 11th Cav in VN always wore the rgt. patch, even after "Rgt" had withdrawn and the one remaining sqdn. was a major command reporting to TRAC (Third Regional Assistance Command), which I don't believe had it's own patch.

There was no 2AD(FWD) at that time. It didn't come about till the `70s. Could be either PREPO stuff or stuff shipped over and these guys picked it up and preped it for the incoming unit. "Operation Big Lift" was a for runner of REFORGER.

Probably something to do with the guy working on the engine?

That or he's installing the canvas cover for the gun mantle,

That's an item made of canvas back then. Pretty sure they weren't installed when stored. Notice the tank in the foreground doesn't have one installed yet either.

Wonder which Autobahn they were staged on ??

Looks a bit like one of the war landing strips... probably a 'C' type suitable only for aircraft like the alphajet.
