The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Yeah, it looks like an XM701 - I thought the only survivor was at Fort Knox... Is that Fort Benning? Can you provide the original flickr page link?

Thanks,

Neil

Yep, that must be the old National Infantry Museum's exterior display at Fort Benning.

I wasnt aware they had a 2S1, Abrams or XM701 - I wonder if they are relatively recent additions...

Can anyone ID the Abrams model? I wonder if it was the first Abrams to enter Iraq since 3-69 Armor was supposedly the first to enter during ODS?

Neil,

She's an M1IP 105mm. If she entered Iraq during Desert Storm she would have to sport 1st ID, 2nd BDE markings from Fort Riley with either 3-37 or 4-37 Armor numbers. They were at Safwan when it all ended and the only two battalions that had them. 3-69 had switched to M1A1's before the ground war kicked off IIRC.

Oops, my mistake 3-69 was the first to enter Iraq in OIF I. Which makes an M1IP even more obsolete...
