The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

This vehicle seems to be modified with the addition of an Universal Carrier chassis, but was it originally a German or British truck/lorry?

Hi P-O

It is German truck

The German army used obselete Panzer I track assembly's to convert standard truck to halftrack truck's

The most famous is the Opel Blitz generaly called Maultier (Mule)

However the German army also used big quantities of captured British Universal Carrier (or similair captured equipmant) to convert standard truck to halftrack truck's
They even produced their own version of the carrier track assembly

This was done with truck's from al major truckbuilders, so Mercedes and of course the Ford Motor Company

And that is what we have here, an Ford V3000S Maultier

If you think about it, it is an strange thing Confused Confused

The largest truck suppliers for the German Wehrmacht where actually American companies

The Opel Blitz truck, the most used truck in the German army
In 1931 the General Motors Corporation became 100% owner of OPEL

The FORD V3000 V-8 trucks, build at the Ford-Werke Cologne
The Ford-Werke are an subsidiary of the Ford Motor Company
Subsidiary means that the Ford Motor Company owned more then 50% of the share's

I must ask as to why this has to be hushed up?

isn't it a fact, or are we suppose to suffer from a selective memory ?

Valid point. The triumph of business interests over other considerations. As long as this thread doesn't take an ominous political swerve, there is no harm in acknowledging history.

This brings me to the following question. Was Continental a German or a US firm before the 2nd WW? This because I've seen German tanks from the 2nd World War with rubber around the roadwheels with the name ''continental'' on it.

I remember that I was very surprised about this.

Just a question, nothing more!!

No - its just that it starts the same old arguements -rather like the topic of british lend-lease repayments......

I have been searching and Continental has been and still is an German company

The actually name is Continental AG and it was founded in 1871 in Hannover, Germany

From what I could find, they did not go to the US untill 1987 when it bought an US tire manufacturer called General Tire
(I think all US companies start or end with General Mr. Green )

At the present time it is part of the German Scheaffler Group, known in Europe for INA roller bearings

General Motors

(sorry for General Patton, he isn't in the top 3).

He is not even among the top 5, adding to the list

4. General Dynamics
5. General Lee (the Dodge Charger 1969 RT from Dukes of Hazzard)

(Sorry for General Lee, from the US Civil War)
