Neil-M60's in Louissiana
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Shreveport used to be the home of the 1/156 AR. HHC, B, and D companies were located there. Vivian had C company. Ball had no National Guard, but A Company 1/156 was near there in Coushatta. Alexandria had 199th FSB. As far as I know Zwolle had no National Guard, but Many, LA had a mech infantry company. The paint job is from someone's pipe dream!

LAARNG did not have M60A3. Went from M60A1's straight to M!IP, then M1A1's. Have no idea where these A3's came from. Fort Polk didn't have them either as far as I can recall.

Ft Polks 5th Inf Div never had M60A3's.

I was assigned to 3/70 Ar at Ft Polk in Aug 1989. Upon arrival all 3 Armor Bns in 5th ID had M-1's. The units had recently completed transition from M60A1's at that time.

I remember the railhead being littered with the M60A1's as they were being gradually shipped out to destinations unknown.

The M-1's we had during my time there, 1989-1991, were all reissued (first generation) M-1's. They were turned in from units in Germany.

A nightmare scenario we had to endure since these were not factory rebuilds but 'repaint & reissue' as they had arrived from Germany. Evil or Very Mad

I believe 5th ID transitioned to M1A1's in 92-93, prior to moving to Ft Hood ( & being reflagged as 2AD / 4th ID / ...) Rolling Eyes

Don

Don, I spent the spring of 88 with B 3/70. They still had M60A1's. They were getting them ready to loan to 1/152 AR- Alabama National Guard for AT. The Bama boys still had M60 Slicks. Still remember Alabama fire commands.

TC- Hey Cooter, there's some tanks out yonder!

Gunner- I sees them! I sees them!

TC- Well shoot the sum bitches!

Gunner- Awright! Rock n roll!

I remember a few parts of a typical LAARNG Fire Command:

TC: 'Gitty up & Geaux,....Driver Woooo!!
Translation: 'Driver move out,....Driver Stop!!'

Gunner & TC: 'AH - YEEE!!!!'
Translation: 'Target Cease Fire'

BTW: I was C66 Gunner for Cpt Davis (C Co 3/70). When we got a new Commander (that I didn't get along with...) I was moved to become C11 Gunner for a new arrival 'Ring Knocker'.

Same with us in 1st ID,

Went from M60A1 to used M1's from Germany. Only thing new was the paint jobs Rolling Eyes . Good thing was the turn in of the M60A1's was "AS IS". Drug a lot of them to the rail head in Funston. Only rule was they had to be able to get on the rail car.

The Shreveport tank (M60A3) is most likely the one at American Legion Post 14, 5315 S Lakeshore Dr. The guard armory there has an M60A0.

1-156 Armor was reflagged as 2-108 Cavalry
* Headquarters and Headquarters Troop (HHT) located in Shreveport, Louisiana.
* Alpha Troop located in Natchitoches, Louisiana (former A Troop, 108th Cavalry).
* Bravo Troop located in Shreveport, Louisiana.
* Charlie Troop located in Coushatta, Louisiana (former A/1-156 Armor).
* Delta Company (FSC attached from 199th BSB) located in Shreveport, Louisiana.
