Ideas and opinions needed for upcoming event in western Ohio
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Ideas and opinions needed for upcoming event in western Ohio

I am involved with the planning of an upcoming military event in Troy, Ohio that will include aviation attractions, military vehicles, living history displays and demonstrations and I would like to ask you all for some advice / opinions.

Last year the committee chose to send a small cash stipend to all of the registered vehicle owners. I don't feel that in most cases this is necessary. Our budget is not that large so this, I believe puts an unnecessary strain on it. I also feel the most vehicle enthusiasts "live for " these events and if they bring their vehicles by their own free will there should be no need for compensation. We do have some "star" attractions that we have invited ( M4A3E8 Sherman tank, LVT and one families large collection of vehicles) so I do understand the need to pay invited guests to cover their expenses. What are your thoughts and opinions on this?
We need some ideas for hands on activities for younger kids, such as a booth where they camo paint/ makeup their faces. Vehicles rides would be great but then you have to worry about liability issues. So, lets hear so of your ideas or tell us what other events you know of do for kids.
Lastly, just any ideas or suggestions for what you would like to see at a military event.
Thanks,

Mike Haines

Mike:

Being a vehicle owner myself, I would like to weigh in on this one.

I own a WC-63 that is undergoing restoration. When I bring it to an event, I will not expect to get reimbursed. That's part of my kit, no different than a 1919A4, BAR or Musette bag. Of course reimbursement would be nice, but if we are talking ~$25.00 it's almost not worth it. Catch my drift?

On the other hand, the museum I volunteer at will be getting a T-34 in the next few months. It will cost almost $2.00 a mile to go anywhere with it. If you pooled all the $25.00 payments to all the jeep guys (that don't need it in the first place) you could afford to move a few of the heavies to your event.

I feel that many reenactors would rather see the money go to the heavies than to everyone. As long as they get to play along side it, not send it off to some tank battle halfway across the event grounds. Smile
