Ontos (Cross posted from Missing Lynx Modern DG)
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi,

Don't know if this has shown up here yet:

www.network54.com/Foru...N+ORNAMENT

Sounds like a good location on where it is now, too.

Chuck

Huh....?

Actually I'm happy that this one may get some TLC, if it gets transferred to a USMC museum on the 'left coast'.

I've had images of this 'PIG' since 2003.

However it is always nice to get updates on any Ontos that are 'out there' (waving my hand in the air....)

Regards
Don

Hi,

I seem to recall that there was a good deal of recent wondering and questions about what is out at "the Stumps". Mike is stationed there right now, I think, and might be good for someone here with a Marine past to contact. He's a good egg and an armor modeler, who might be willing to get some pics of what is MIA in the desert there.

History & Museums Camp Pendleton has been trying for the past several months without great success to obtain the Ontos in question from 29 Palms, and the only news I'm hearing is that we're "getting closer". It seems as though we're being given the run-around by all sides with letters and documentation being requested from everyone and his brother. I personally doubt that we're any closer than we were when we first inquired about it, but I'm just a volunteer in no position of power so I can't do anything about it.

Could not agree more with the statement made by the second poster in that thread too, although I don't personally know anything about the LVT-1 from Tarawa. If I'm not mistaken, there is an LVT-1 in the LVT museum that was at the very least cosmetically restored from the ground up, could be the same one, but I don't know.

Just thinkin' about the paint, Don Wink . Other than that, there does appear to be a fairly presentable model here.

Exterior wise, she seems very complete. The interior condition is perhaps most important.

But alas, it sounds as though 'she'll' just rot in the desert along with another 60 + Ontos at China Lake.

Soley because some mindless drone of an administrator is afraid to make a minor decision and sign a legitimate institutional request to preserve /restore a piece of Marine Corps history.

A sad state of affair Crying or Very sad

Don't get me wrong, I think that we'll get it eventually, but I think that it will only be after museum volunteers do most of the hard work...
