"Sherman minutia" website
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: "Sherman minutia" website

Hello,

I plan to create a website with "Sherman minutia", including :
-The list of Serial Numbers with corresponding manufacturers
-The list of known SNs with current location
-Some pages explaining the various turret models (low bustle, high bustle, T23 etc..), the different roadwheel, sprocket, hatches, engine bay doors models that existed.
-Some pages with the SN location and the foundry symbols and casting markings.

The aim is to publish a content similar to this one :
http://web.inter.nl.net/users/spoelstra/g104/subjects.htm
but with much more information and items described, which would cover all the variety of parts that you could find on a Sherman.

Where could I find the technical names of the items in English?
Who would help to set-up this website? (I would need some pictures from here and there..)
It would be nice to have at least the help of Kurt Laughlin Mr. Green

P-O

Kurt probably knows most of this by heart but the "proper names" for many parts would come from Standard Nomenclature List G104. The SNL is the equivalent to a parts catalog for Ordnance items.

Gary,

I've found the SNL G-207 (Tank, Medium, M4A1, 76mm Gum, wet) and now I have the proper names for the parts. Thanks for the advice.

Hello,

I did some updates today :

http://the.shadock.free.fr/sherman_minutia/index.html

added a "Sherman vocabulary" page and 3 pages about the turrets.

Please let me know if there are some wrong information or mistakes on these pages.

thanks

Pierre-Olivier

http://the.shadock.free.fr/sherman_minutia/differential/differential_covers.html

hello,

I added a page today, which covers the different differential covers that can be found on Sherman tanks.

Please let me know if there are some mistakes or if anything can be added to this.

I also would like to send an email to Hanno Spoelstra, because I'm working on a page which lists the different models of Sherman tracks, and his page is already a reference for this subject. Does he have an email address ?

thanks

Pierre-Olivier

Pierre-Oliver,

You can find a e-mail link on each web page of my Sherman site web.inter.nl.net/users...stra/g104/

Although (too) many years have passed since I last updated my site, my original aim was to only publish what wasn't already published in books at the time. I never felt the need to retype stuff that was already written down somewhere. I find your "Sherman minutia" website a commendable idea, I will help if & where I can (time permitting).

Here is a start for some of your subjects:
- the_shadock
-The list of Serial Numbers with corresponding manufacturers

web.inter.nl.net/users...serial.htm

-Some pages with the SN location and the foundry symbols and casting markings.

web.inter.nl.net/users...oundry.htm

HTH,
Hanno

Great progress on "Sherman minutia" website since September 2010. Joe DeMarco and me set up 9 pages which explain the variations in production of the M4 Sherman with small hatches, one page for each manufacturer.

For example, to see how a Fisher M4A2 differs from, let's say, a FMW or an ALCO, and how to know that an M4A2 was made by Fisher without the serial number, just look at this page :
http://the.shadock.free.fr/sherman_minutia/manufacturer/m4a2fisher/m4a2fisher_variants.html

The other pages are to be found here :
http://the.shadock.free.fr/sherman_minutia/index.html

We've started to work on M4A1 with large hatches, and I hope that we will cover all the types of shermans within 2 years.

one more page added to the site, it describes the production variants of the 105mm Shermans (M4s and M4A3s). The page features one pic from Massimo Foti (M74 TRV) and one from "clausb" (M4A3E4).

Hi Folks! Hi Soldat!

Love the new site. Good luck Soldat!

I have a production related question.

Did the plants that built the tanks, also make the turrets?
Or did another plant with casting equipemt make all the turrets?

Puzzled,
Sgt, Scouts out!

Roy,

thanks for your question.
There were 9 Sherman manufacturers : Pressed Steel Car, Chrysler, ALCO, Fisher, Baldwin, FMW, Lima LW, Pullman Standard.

Turrets were made by several suppliers, such as : Scullin Steel (SS logo), American Steel Foundries (C or G in an octogon), Buckeye Steel (B in a circle), Continental Foundry and Machine (W in a C), Pittsburgh Steel Foundry (PSF), Union Steel Castings (U in . The M4A1 hulls were also supplied by Continental Foundry and Machine, General Steel, Pittsburgh Steel Foundry...

so the parts makers and the manufacturers are not the same..
