AMX-13 at Leeuwarden AFB
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

In front of the Su-20 in fake Soviet markings is a AMX-13 in fake markings at Leeuwarden Air Base, Friesland (NLD).

I didn't know any F4 Phantoms still flew! Half a century ago my uncle helped design this legendary aircraft.

Still flown by Greece, Turkey, Japan, Israel and Germany.
In the US it is still used for missile tests but in ever smaller numbers.

There are (were?) some German RF-4s at Holloman AFB in New Mexico, I believe they are (were?) stationed there. We occasionally see (saw?) them transiting through Davis-Monthan AFB on training missions. Since we usually mostly see F16s and A10s, they stand out by the noise and smoke.

In the 60s and early 70s there were lots of F4s in and out of D-M. We even had at least one do some urban renewal about 600 yds off the northwest end of the runway. They have been gone for a while, but you can tell the folks who have lived here for a long time, because they look up and wonder if that is an F4 from the sound!

I've also seen that F4 in the skies over Tucson, since they conduct the pre-airshow dissimilar aircraft certification training here in the early spring every year. It gives us a chance to see P51s, P47s, and a lot of other historic aircraft in flight during the training. The difference in sounds is interesting, although the older planes aren't as quiet as you might expect them to be, even compared to the jets they are flying with.

Chuck

They sure do. Last F-4's I saw flying "live" was in Idaho. Unenviable smoke signature but the baddest looking plane that ever sliced air (if we discount the X-15).

The German air force has one unit left (JagdGeschwader 71) at Wittmundshafen. It is a popular place to visit for aircraft spotters and you can take nice pictures there.

I especially liked the older models (F-4C, and F-4D) because of the ''howling'' sound of the engines, like the F-104G Razz

For some really nice pictures of Japanese Phantoms (and other) look here;
