Sherman tank relic
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi folks,

small question, how did an Sherman tank end up in Uganda, Africa?
I was searching in Flckr and found an Sherman in an picture taken there

www.flickr.com/photos/...687672192/

Untill 1962 Uganda was part of the British Commonwealth (well actually it was an colony)
So I would expect British tanks, or after the independence Russian T-54 / T-55

Some one an idea Confused
Some strange foreign aid programm perhaps Confused

Michel:

That is a former Israeli vehicle . . . an M1 Super Sherman. Notice the various external fittings. Israel had some dealings with Uganda in the 1960s (?) and 1970s . . . weapons transfers, troop training, etc. (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Those dealings were probably sunk by the Entebbe affair, I would imagine.

Edit: Oh, now I notice that "Lens Envy" has answered basically the same thing on the picture site.

Hi Mark,

thank's for answering the question

The comment along the picture at Flickr, that it's an US or Israeli based Super Sherman doesn't realy answer the question how it ended in Uganda Wink

Back before Idi Amin went off the deep end he was making friends with Israel. One reason they could conduct the rescue at Entebbe was because they had plans for the airport because they had helped build it. It wouldn't surprise me that they had provided some military aid in the form of older tanks and other equipment to the Ugandan Army
