Calling JoeD on M48A3 question...
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Calling JoeD on M48A3 question...

Elsewhere, someone has asked:

"Would someone know how much ready ammunition the M73 had on the M48A3?"

Which I take to mean, in the bin. Hunnicutt lists 5,900 for the total loadout. What was regulation for the ready bin?

Thanks!
D.

I have 2200 rounds of 7.62 NATO.

But that from a single source.

Thanks, Joe. Can you tell me what that source is, if asked? Just trying to help out someone else who wanted to know this.

Doug,

I originally shot from the hip on this one. M60 slick had 2200 rounds and was the first to convert to NATO 7.62mm. M48A3 used M60 parts when upgraded to include M73/219 MG which required bin swap out. Since you asked for references, source is from TM 9-2350-224-10, the operators manual for M48A3. Decided to verify this so I dug my copy out.

M48A3 Ammunition Stowage

I guess me saying so isn't good enough Wink That's why I posted the page from the TM.

Thanks Joe,

Your saying so is good enough for me, but since I'm answering somebody else's question... Wink

That TM page looks like it might have been re-printed in Hunnicutt...was it? I looked there, but just in back for the loadout information. If it's straight from the TM, then I for sure wouldn't have that one.

Doug,

The page came right out of TM 9-2350-224-10 JAN 1966 with changes 1-12. That's why you have the Figure and TM number included. But it is in "Patton" too. Pages 224 and 239 for M48A3 and M48A5 respectively. Just be careful using "Patton" as a sole source. There are a few discrepancies in it (I feel like a finger painter criticizing Michelangelo). The back data sheets sometimes are a little off. Case in point the M728. Lists total capacity as 2000 rounds, should be 3600 with 2200 in the ready.

BTW, capacity is the same (2200) for both the curved M48/60 box and square M60A1/A3/M728 box. Only the A2's were different with 3000 rounds.
