News from Ft Knox
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

The T34 photo was taken in Richardson Motor Pool in May 2009. It is currently in the same location.

The M103A2 Photo was during the same time period, although I'm not sure of specific day/month.

Regards
Don

Thanks - updated. Do you have a date for the black and white photo of the T34 (even an estimate)?

Unique ID 1275: FK T34

Unique ID 1279: FK M103A2

- Dontos

What I can do, is do a reshoot of all the Heavy tanks on the same day. Currently the T29 & T30 are statically located infront of Marshall Hall. The T29E3, T34, T43, and M103A2 are located in RMP.

Many thanks! I hope to work through those photo's over the next week.

Trevor

I have no clue when the T34 Black & White photo was taken. A clue is the unit crest painted on the turret, perhaps the late 70's?

I've posted interiors & some exteriors of all the Heavy tanks that are now in RMP.

The relocation plan is in full swing so all the tanks that will be moving to Ft Benning are in the process of being hauled to RMP. I'll try to get good photographic records on them all, as they show up to RMP.

Stay tuned

Don

Just looking thru some fairly recent photo files, I found this for your Heavy Tank index.

The T29 Heavy Tank: (Photos taken in April 2010)

Enjoy

Added, thanks:

Ok, I've gone with 1978:

We will be using the open spoked road wheels switched from the M10 and M7 in front of the museum. Those two will be staying.

Garry, on the Volunteer News page it looks like the T28 GMC link is broken:

Thanks Trevor. I had removed the T28 section quite awhile back, but missed that link.

A note from this mornings visit to RMP:

More vehicles have been moved from around post to RMP. The latest vehicles are the following:

1) M4A3E8 Sherman (SN 61203) Formerly in front of Gaffey Hall
2) M84 APC (RN 361425) Formerly accross the street from Gaffey Hall.
3) M5A1 Stuart (SN 3063) Formerly in front of 4th Bde

More moves scheduled for next week. Next are vehicles in the Disney Barracks area.

I'm continuing to try and add all Fort Knox vehicles to PTC, so I can bring them up to date. Latest additions:

Unique ID 1296: Fort Knox M2A3 light

Unique ID 1297: Fort Knox M2A1 medium

Unique ID 1298: Fort Knox T5E1

- the M2A3 was previously at the Smithsonian so I've also added an entry for the Smithsonian:

Smithsonian Institution

If anyone can add any information regarding the Smithsonian, please shout. One apparent mystery is that the Smithsonian photo of its M1917 shows a 37mm version, whereas the M1917 that went to Quantico and APG is an MG version.

Trevor, do a search for Smithsonian on the board. I discussed their former collection back around December / January...

Here's what I was talking about.
com-central.net/index....mithsonian

I spoke briefly to one of the Smithsonian military historians - sounded like their ordnance collection was broken up a long time ago. I think Dontos said one of the Patton Museum German tanks came from the Smithsonian?

Anyway, the Smithsonian ordnance collection was gone long before this historian came on the job...

Neil, yes I did that search and found that and other links before I wrote the Smithsonian entry. It confirmed the information I have with regard to the M1917 and Panther II (see the Tanks Previously Here links on the Smithsonian page), but I have not been able to find out about any vehicles beyond those 3. Presumably there were more than 3 (or 4 if we accept there were at least 2 x M1917) given the 'several Panthers and others...' quote which implies a large collection.

More additions (I'm currently working through the light tanks):

Unique ID 1299: Fort Knox (Museum) M41A3

- it came from Letterkenny so I've started a Letterkenny entry:

Letterkenny Army Depot

Unique ID 1302: Fort Knox (Keyes Park) M41

Unique ID 1303: Fort Knox (Warehouse) QM41 Target Puller

Unique ID 1304: Fort Knox (Keyes Park) M24

Unique ID 1305: Fort Knox (Warehouse, previously Museum) M24

- this one ('The Phoenix') appears to have been a French veteran of Algeria, so I've pieced together a likely location history, as can be seen on its map, and added some background links.

Unique ID 1306: Fort Knox (Officers Club, Chaffee Avenue) M24

Unique ID 1307: Fort Knox (Boudinot Hall, Old Ironsides Ave) M24

Nice stuff Trevor. Here are a few notes to update your latest entries.

The M41A3 was stored for a number of years in the LST building. It has since been relocated to Richardson Motor Pool, where it is currently located awaiting transportation to Ft Benning, Ga

This M41 is currently located in RMP.

QM41 is in RMP

This M24 is now in RMP

This M24 is on display in the museum

This M24 may be the one located at the 'Chaffee Gate' (on Bullion Blvd)

This M24 is currently located at Ft Benning Ga. It was transported in one of the convoys several months ago.

Trevor,
That "M41A3" is supposedly a T41E1, the M41A3 pilot vehicle.

According to my info this is SN 2762, RN30121290, and has been repainted as "Rebel's Roost."
