M4A1 Flamethrower (a close encounter....)
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. Today I ventured into the M4A1. Unfortunately I didn't get into the turret. It seems to be the home of a family of Raccoons who took offense of my presence in the drivers seat, so I did an immediate evacuation with the hissing of the biggest one,......

Anyway here are a few photos I did take.

Don

Thanks Don!

What is the S/N on that?

Please look at the left rear upperhull side, below the lift lug. There should be a build sequence number stamped there. (An alternate position is the right side.

Thx,
KL

7152 is stamped on the front above the BOG MG port. I'll check build seq stamp tomorrow. Volunteer work day in the MP so I can check it.

Don, I was wondering what you read off the data plate - the photo goes dark right at the stamping. That's got to be at least a 5-digit serial.

The build number on the rear will be between 3701 and 5661, say in the upper half.

Thx,
KL

Kurt

I actually didn't get the time to read it directly, the hissing (& quite upset) demanded my attention as I took the photo.

Today I took a few additional photos.....

On the rear stampings 'hunt', I didn't find the build sequence number. There is quite a few layers of paint obscuring and I was running short of time.

I did happen to find this right rear located stamping....

I will check out the M4A1 on my next RMP visit to see if I an locate that sequence number.

Don

Hey Dontos,

Dude!! You have such a cool life! Not only getting to be around these AFVs, but crawling inside! Plus wrestling ferocious critters!

I thought I had a cool gig!

BTW are the raccoons going to Benning?

Cheers!

Don - That looks like an acceptance stamp (note the flaming bomb on right)

If you email me you dataplate photo I can try to read it.

Here's an example of the build sequence number from Pierre-Oliver's site:

the.shadock.free.fr/Ta...age25.html

The locations are on page 11 of my guide here:

This vehicle is the E13R1-13R2 or M42E13

Kurt

A slight problem in locating the build sequence SN is there appears to have been some hull modifications. I'll search again, on next visit, but here is a shot which basically shows the left side.

I was wondering what the 'blocks' welded on the left & right rear sides are for.....?

As for the interior, I haven't written it off, just gotta use a little more caution, perhaps a small handheld 'air horn',.....ha ha ha! (short of using smoke or CS, the air horn may work...)

Interesting vehicle. Quite a few vehicles at Aberdeen seemed to have been involved in more than one 'experiment' and that is probably the case with this vehicle.

It looks like, at some stage blocks of something were welded along the hull sides as well?

Do you have an image of the hull rear as I suspect I know what this was before it became the M42E13?

Jim

The last photo is the most decent shot of the overal rear, due to the 'parking arrangement'.

If you need a specific angle or close up, that might be possible. What area of interest would help?

The engine access hatches area on the rear plate specifically - I'm looking for strange weld marks or pipe fittings.

I can see the top engine decks okay but if there are any strange weld marks/bolt holes there an image would be appreciated.

Hi,

Those pads are very thoroughly welded to the tank, which is probably why they are still there. In the photo is appears that a shaft of some type has been burned off. I considered some kind of towing apparatus, but that seems an awkward arrangement for mounting something like that. Is it possible that this tank carried some sort of gantry or crane-type structure? (I'm thinking something resembling the boom on an M32 or an M88.) Perhaps something dangled in front of the tank, like a fascine or some kind of bridging equipment, or it was a prototype recovery vehicle. Any other ideas?

I think I can fill a few of those requests....

Overal, there does not seem to be any signs of 'nonstandard' welds or attachment points on the tank, beside the blocks.

Here is a comparison close up of those blocks:

As for the rear engine deck, it seems normal to me:

I'll see about close up photos of the'grill doors' on my next RMP visit.
