An Obsession revisited...T95 & T118
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: An Obsession revisited...T95 & T118

I stumbled into some images that were new to me so I thought I'd post them for those who are also perplexed with the T95 program of the 1950-60's.

Unfortunately I only had my camera today so the images are pictures of the photos. quality of the photos are caused by difficult lighting.

First the T118 CEV (based on the T95)

And here are some various photos of different types of T95's

This is 3 photos of a destroyed T95 Heavy tank. I believe it is a T95E5 or T95E6.

Any ideas about where the destroyed T95 was/is? Could be the one at Camp Grayling...

The original photos are B&W with no notations of date or location.

If it exists still, it would be the only surviving T95 Heavy tank.

All the surviving T95's are Mediums.

I'm assuming what you - or the photos - mean by "T95 Heavy" is simply a T95 with a 120mm gun? The chassis wasnt any "heavier" AFAIK. It just had a bigger gun.

That does truly merit the "heavy" term IMO.

Yes, you are correct.

The program is split between Heavy & Medium referring to the main armament 90mm, 105mm, or 120mm. As the photos show the turrets have the primary sizable difference based on whatever main gun was mounted. The programs chassis's are 2 styles of T95 hybred chassis's and later in the program M48 or M60 stlye chassis's.

Excuse me, can you ID a gun of that T95 (9B1046)?

Don,
It looks like David Haugh is selling some T95 pictures on ebay:

Those are all clearly TACOM photos...what's the legality of selling them like that? My thought would be that an original print would still be owned by TACOM, but I suppose copies of them might be open to sales.

Does he have to explicitly state that he's only selling the print and not the rights, or is that a "caveat emptor" sort of thing?

Chuck

I'm pretty sure he's just selling the print,

If they were copyright material I'm sure he'd water mark them so folks won't just copy them from the site. Most look like original prints made from Negatives TACOM made from the time period.

TACOM - or any other federal government agency - does not have the ability to copyright anything produced in the performance of official duties.

Q: Is a U.S. Government work provided copyright protection?

A: In the United States, U.S. Government works are covered by 17 USC § 105.59 "Copyright protection … is not available for any work of the United States Government, but the United States is not precluded from receiving and holding copyrights transferred to it by assignment, bequest, or otherwise." Exceptions are available for certain works of the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) and the U.S. Postal Service. Copyright protection may be available for U.S. Government works outside the United States (see FAQ Section 3.1.6). When a copyrighted work is transferred to the U.S. Government, the Government becomes the copyright owner and the work retains its copyright protection.

Q: What is the history of the copyright treatment of U.S. Government works?

A: Ever since 1895, statutory provisions have prohibited the assertion of copyright in any publication of the U.S. Government. The provisions have been only slightly modified since their enactment. See "Copyright in Government Publications: Historical Background, Judicial Interpretation, and Legislative Clarification." CPT Brian R. Price. Military Law Review. Vol. 74. (1976), p. 19-63.
