Wisconsin trip report
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Wisconsin trip report

Following up on my last posting on Minnesota, here are the results from my travels in Wisconsin this fall. Some of these numbers will just confirm what is already in the Register, but some are new and will help fill in some blanks. Naturally, I also took photos of each of the vehicles, and I have posted these to my Photobucket page. I will post results for Michigan, Ontario and Quebec later as I get it all organized. s698.photobucket.com/h.../allalbums

Wisconsin

Crandon
M60A3, listed location is incorrect. The vehicle is now located at the County Courthouse Square, 297 South Lake Ave at E. Polk St.
N45 34.053 W088 54.146
SN 3393A is confirmed, RN is JJ01HK
This vehicle can be seen on Google Street View.

Hurley
M60A3, listed address is correct
I could not read either SN or RN due to a thick coat of non slip texture paint on much of this vehicle.
N46 26.682 W090 10.995
This vehicle can be seen on Google Street View.

Ladysmith
M60A3, located in the Rusk County Historical Museum at Edgewood Ave & E 3rd St N. The museum was closed the day I was there so all I could do is photograph it through the fence. Could not verify numbers.
N45 28.367 W091.06.000

Rhinelander
M60A3, listed address is correct. N45 37.752 W089 23.701
RN is JJ0314.
As for the SN, on the front tow lug A342 is stamped, but overstamped with large Xs, and 042 is stamped above. I don’t know what this means, does anyone out there?

Rice Lake
M60A3, listed address is correct. N45 29.184 W091 44.111
SN is confirmed as 3368A, RN is JJ00RD
This vehicle can be seen on Google Street View.

Spooner
M4A3(75)VVSS, listed location is correct for vehicle at the armory on Hwy 70 just east of town.
N45 49.327 W091 52.834
SN is confirmed as 12198, clearly visible stamped into the vehicle.
This vehicle can be seen on Google Street View.

Tomahawk
M4A3(105)HVSS, listed address is correct. N45 28.575 W089 43.732
SN 65603, clearly visible on the rear tow lugs.
This vehicle can be seen on Google Street View, although in a previous location. It was recently moved across the street to its’ present location.

Wabeno
M4A3(105)HVSS, listed address is incorrect. This vehicle is located at Legion Post 44 on North Branch St (Hwy 32) at Cecil Ave. There were a lot of numbers stamped into the glacis plate of this tank. On the top right (from the drivers perspective), the number 132 was stamped, then below it was 211, then below that was 1062956, then below that was CP7439. Beside that was 9617. On the drivers’ side, lower corner was 4024. On the rear plate, unfortunately there was a box that I think was for the infantry phone on the right side. It covered what may have been the serial number, but only the digits 125 were visible. Most confusing. I welcome any comments.

This vehicle can be seen on Google Street View.

Alf,

The first batches of M60A3's made in Detroit had SN's stamped with A3 to indicate they were not A1's. So the serial number would be A3 SN42, then later they just stamped her 042. Funny thing was the nomenclature M60A3 wasn't officially recognized until MAR 79, and by then they were fielding A3's in Germany with 3AD. Below is an example of SN 012.

She's a pilot though, that's why you see A12, later she became A3 012. TACOM has her as 3012A, an Anniston rebuild but that's an error on the documents. Can you post a good picture of the lug?

Here is a photo of the tow lug, as well as a closeup of the glacis where the number is also stamped.
