Interesting M48
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Interesting. Looks to be an M48 or M48A1 chassis with the turret of an M48A3. The turret has a vision-riser between the cupola and turret and the stowage bracket for an ANVSS-2 searchlight, neither of which belong on a "true" M48A1.

What the H*** is going on???

That is a rare turret, look at the M1 cupola, it's got the same mounting lug for the M2 Flex mount as the the M48A3's have at Knox and Riley. A distinct Vietnam modification. Looks like a lash up of an excess turret installed on an excess hull. Hull is definitely an M48A1, large hatch. Hasn't been upgraded either, still has the light #1 arms and older adjusting link. Fort Dix used to be pretty big on hard targets and also was one of the main supporters for the big "Sea Dump/Reef Building" projects. If I were to guess, she was a rescue from either a hard target lot or Sea Dump. Many M48A3's were converted to AVLB's, Turrets had to go somewhere eventually, just like those M60A2 turrets. Thank you Anniston for creating another history confusing artifact Rolling Eyes .

First I've seen of these, Nice catch Jim.

Think of them as puzzles for the AFV DG. Wink
