M60 at Ft. Lewis
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: M60 at Ft. Lewis

Hi,

Found this sitting next to Range Control on Main Post, across the street from an M47. Seems like a plain vanilla M60 to me...!

The only apparent oddity is these weld marks on the turret. They look like patches or something, but that doesn't seem right. Is there something in the manufacturing process that would leave these as an artifact?

Anyone have any guesses?

Chuck

Those could be either where the casting gates and vents were ground off or where surface defects were excavated and filled with weld metal. Armor welds were (maybe still are) made with stainless steel filler metal and are thus non-magnetic. The next time you are out there, take a magnet. If the patch has obviously less pull than the surrounding casting, it is a weld. If not, compare the "pull" of the magnet on a known weld to that of a piece of armor. If there is no difference the tank was probably made with magnetic weld metal, and you wouldn't be able to tell without removing all the paint.

Examine the interior of the barrel and where it enters the mantlet (images if possible) - report back.

Jim,

Here you go...I didn't see much out of the ordinary. What are you looking for?
