M41 picture question
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: M41 picture question

Found this picture of a M41 with these modifications on the turrent. The website gave no info on what was done.
Questions.
1) What are the boxes mounted on the turrent, anti-tank missiles?
2) Is that added armor on the sides of the turrent?
3) Was this a US or foreign modification?
4) Was it ever fielded?

Thanks,

Most closely resembles DANISH M41 DK1, which had multiple FCS mods. Skirts match, too, unlike with Brazilian and Taiwanese versions.
Most of what's on the turret is stowage, apart from LSR and night vision stuff and searchlight on front.

www.armyvehicles.dk/m41dk1.htm

"Here the DK1 version of the M41. The turret modification is clearly visible. The old gasoline engine was replaced by a new turbo-charged diesel powerpack (Cummins VTA-903TR developing 465 hp at 2.800 rpm). The 76 mm gun remained, but a new type of high performance anti-tank round (APFSDS from AAI International) was bought.
Other improvements includes an NBC system, thermal night vision system (Jahn Anderson) with integrated laser rangefinder (Ericsson Radio Systems), night vision periscope (Texas Instruments) as well as Halogen searchlight mounted on the gun mantlet. The fire control system was made by AEG Telefunken using American, Danish and German components.
Wegmann smoke dischargers were added to the turret. Fire suppression is handled by a system from Graviner (Firewire).
Note the Leopard 1-like side skirt."

Most closely resembles Dutch M41 DK1

Doug, that should be Danish, not Dutch.

You are of course, right. I knew it and was looking right at it and thinking Danish when I typed "Dutch". Brain Phart. Rolling Eyes
