M109 SPH
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi folks

about an week ago, there was an M109 parked at an heavy transport company in my home town (Van Der Vlist Group, sometimes they also do military equipment)

Has some one an idea of the version?

The quality of the photo's is not very good, because they where taken with an camera of an telephone
The originals are only an little bigger, so there is no possibility to post larger photo's

License plates of the vehicle are white, so I think it came from Belgium (Dutch vehicles have yellow plates)
Reason for picking Belgium is that it is the only surrounding country that still have some of them
To my knowledge, the German army replaced them all with the PanzerHaubitze 2000 or retired them

Michel

A1 or later, from the gun tube. Other factors are things like periscope protection and other items that (I think) are not readily visible.

Only the original versions were in service at the same time I was. Arty specialists might spot stuff not apparent to tankers.

Michel

Its a German M 109 A3 GE A2. It has the same gun as the FH70 and was only used by the Germans.
Seems they have some 200 of them still in service. See also (german only)
