More Scenes from 'Behind the walls'
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: More Scenes from 'Behind the walls'

Monday 8 Nov:

Plans & activities continue for the preparation & shipment of previously exhibited artifacts that are in the Museum.

The Tiger II has her skirts removed to lesson the width of the vehicle & so the skirts don't get damaged in the upcoming move.

The 'famous' Remagen Bridge sign which has been on display since the end of WWII is packed and ready to be moved.

Many were unaware of the source of the sign, used by the 9th AD in 1945. The 'reverse' side plainly gives the casual observer of it former use. It was at the 'ferry landing' beside the actual bridge location. It was 'liberated' by the soldiers of the 9th AD, and then used to 'announce the bridge's 'liberators', for all the follow on forces to see.

Regards
Don

Hi,

That sign is a great example of the tiny details that really make history come alive to people who aren't too excited by the major event that is the focus of what is in the books. It's nothing that earthshaking, and won't change the way 'experts' view the capture of the bridge, but it gives a depth to the story that is so frequently lost in the retelling. Neat find, and I'm personally glad that you shared.

Chuck

The Köln-Düsseldorfer is not an real ferry for cars or such

It is an sort of river cruise company that offers boat trips along the river Rhine, starting at Düsseldorf and ending at Mainz

That would be +/-250km and one of the rest / stopping locations along this trip is Remagen

The type of ship used for such trips would stop at an floating pontoon in the river where the passengers can get on or off
Most likely the sign came from such pontoon

Michel
