M44 SPH at Ft. Lewis, WA
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi,

I figured with the discussion about M43s below, I'd get this one up. From October of this year:

It's located on the west side of 3rd Division Dr, between Kyle and Libby Avenues. It's in pretty good shape other than several inches of water in the hull bottom. Obviously been painted, and someone actually took the time to mask the gauges and data plates before painting. I took a bunch of pics of the interior, and it's pretty complete.

Enjoy!
Chuck

Thanks for that Chuck - entry and photo's added. Thanks too for the location detail as it allowed me to get a good satellite view:

Unique ID 1437: Fort Lewis M44

Location ID 97100: Fort Lewis

Thanks Chuck! I wasnt aware of that one when I visited a couple of years ago.

Trevor, it looks like this one isnt actually the museum per se, but rather as a display on post.

Neil,

Correct. It's tucked in beside a barracks block, which I believe is actually the HQ of the 15th Field Artillery Battalion. If you don't know it's there, you probably won't stumble across where it's hidden.

I've actually got an illustrated user handbook for the 155mm M45 howitzer on the M44 SP mounting dating from 1958 and covering the vehicle and armament. It published by the War Office and comes from the time when the British Army operated a couple of regiments of them. If any owner or museum is interested in it please contact me off line.

I know, but I always log tanks with the main museum at the location. Partly it's convenience, but also it's usually the case that the museum has ownership of them, at least on paper (for example, having gone through the archives at Fort Knox and Bovington, I know the paperwork for the vehicles around those bases is lodged with the respective museums). The bottom line is that if you want to find out more about a particular tank then contacting the museum there is usually the best place to start.

Chuck,
Can you clarify this one? "15th Field Artillery Battalion" shouldnt be quite right. It should be "1-15 Field Artillery" or "2-15 Field Artillery" etc (meaning 1st or 2nd, etc Battalion of the 15th Field Artillery Regiment).

Neil,

Well it's not been a while, but I recall wondering the same thing. I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that it just said "15th" on the sign. Could this be a Corps artillery battalion? But now I'm wondering if it might have said Brigade and my CRS sabotaged me again?

I checked my pics to see if I caught the sign, but no dice. (I tend to frame my pics without too much background stuff, just so no overzealous PFC with a badge can accuse me of OPSEC violations.) So the short answer is...I don't know.

Chuck
