The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Just published by Lulu.com: EGYPTIAN POLICE VEHICLES, by Christopher Weeks

Egypt’s police are among the world’s largest internal security forces, and use a wide range of vehicles, from armored personnel carriers to pickups and patrol cars. Spanning 1980 to 2010, Egyptian Police Vehicles is the product of decades of careful observation and research. This book is the first examination of Egyptian police vehicles and their markings, and is one of the most detailed books ever published on any aspect of Middle Eastern police forces. Appendices cover fire engines, Traffic Administration vehicles, private security firms, police boats, and aircraft. Over 160 photographs are featured, the vast majority of which have never before appeared in print, as well as illustrations, tables, and a map.

Some material in this book originally appeared in AFV NEWS in 1996 and 1997.

Egyptian Police Vehicles is available now for $24.95 from Lulu.com, and will soon be available on Amazon.com. 64pp., illustrated, paperback. ISBN 978-1-257-07597-3.

Hi,

Pretty timely, it seems!

I spotted some shots of an M113 with ACAV shields on it today, but it came and went (on the TV) so fast I couldn't tell if it was an A1/A2 or an A3. It looked like a good subject for an M113 project.

C,

As best I can tell, they are mostly M113A2s in Cairo right now. Your best bet for photos are current news photos (gettyimages.com, Google News, Yahoo News, etc.)

Cool. I was watching FoxNews this morning, and there are lots of M60A3s and M113s sitting peacefully among the protesters.

It was a bit jarring, as I still had this idea that the Egyptians used FWP equipment. I guess the whole military cooperation thing is a lot further along than we knew, on more than just the equipment front. It's interesting to see an Arab army standing around watching protesters without doing anything to stop or control them.

Hi Folks!

I saw a shot of a M113 with the external fuel tanks. It has been set on fire and burned out. I bet if we were to ask Sparky about that, he would tell us the Egyptians failed to use his G..... correctly.

Found it on the Getty images site:

Starting to see Egyptian Abrams in Cairo now - apparently a new column that was sent in (along with F-16s).

Maybe than you knew. The Egyptains have been getting military aid from us, only second to Israel, since the Camp David Accords in `79. They reopened the M60A3 line in the late `80s for them. They've been building M1A1s outside Cario for years. It is strange, got use to seeing T55s around the world in the streets when these things happen. Now in last 2 weeks it seems to be M60A3s in Tunisia and Egypt.

The pics here really reinforce my amazement at the influence of our military assistance programs. Who would have predicted that the Egyptian Army would simply stand and watch as demonstrators protested against the government? A government that originally came to power as a military coup! I marvel at the subtle ways that we influence world events, without ever intending, predicting, and sometimes not even recognizing, that outcome.

I suspect that the entire protest movement and surrounding events stem in some very convoluted ways from the impact of US and European programs and activities in that part of the world.

Chuck
