It's a Fitters track with a Hyab crane for light repairs in the field. Canada, Australia, and the IDF have them in their inventories. I'm not certain about the US having ever used them except tests like this picture here. I'm sure there are other countries out there that use it as well but I don't know off hand.

Thanks. I had seen photos of these in Australian service but I didn't realize the roof opened up like this.

Wonder if they routinely use the crane for that or if 2-3 guys just get in side and push.

I know the back ramp on a 113 can be lifted by 2-3 (mine was one of several with broken cables), and that's lifting from the ground on a below-level incline so you're completely bent over making it more difficult.

Hi Folks!

That is a pilot vehicle. The open area inside the vehicle was for carrying a M113 power pack. The roof would open so the pack could be lifted out and another placed inside for transport.

AFAIK, all production vehicles had a winch installed inside the vehicle and the open roof was not required sence there was no room to carry a power pack. If I remember right, the production vehicles had tie down points for a M113 power pack shipping container on the roof. I don't recall ever seeing the roof open on one with a winch inside.

AFAIK, the US Army never used this version. Mech Infantry Battalions were issued M578 VTRs. As a Scout, that didn't make a lot of sense because the M113s could go a lot of places the M578s were to wide for.

Denmark rebuilt in 20 on the M113 APC "Fitter's Vehicles" bought in the 1970's. Mounted with a Swedish-HIAB Crane with approx. capacity of 3 tons.

No, it's a production M579 and used by about every user of the M113 except the U.S. Army.

Most users of the M579 also use the M806 ARVL.

The Dutch have a combo vehicle of a M806 with the crane and upper hull of the M579.
