Preserved Tanks in Britain
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

I am creating this thread to replace the one that was lost in the 'Great Database Crash'. I'll summarise the collections that were posted and discussed back when the last one was active. I'll also feature recent work - I've taken a temporary break from working on Italy and Fort Knox to make some inroads into my backlog of photographs and information on tanks in Britain to put them online (though I'll be back working on Italy and Fort Knox very soon).

First off, the main pages for reference (but note that many of the locations featured are unfinished, typically indicated by not having an image on these pages):

Preserved Tanks in Britain

Tank Factories and Facilities in Britain

All Tank-Related Locations in Britain

About the first place I wrote up was Saltfleetby, following a discussion with Neil on this forum, and that led to me writing up other Lincolnshire locations:

Saltfleetby

Comet

Museum of Lincolnshire Life

Mark IV Tank

Manby Motorplex

Chieftain, Centurion driver trainer, Centurion ARV, Centurion AVRE

Soon after I planned to visit the west country so I researched and wrote up the firing ranges in case I had the chance to detour to them (unfortunately I never did):

Imber Live Firing Range, Salisbury Plain

Chieftain x 9

Chirton Down, Salisbury Plain

Centurion

Land Warfare Centre, Warminster

Centurion

The two biggest collections I've finished so far are Duxford and Muckleburgh - the latter was special for me as it's the first time I copied Joe's method of raising the camera on a pole to get high-level pictures, with pleasing results.

Imperial War Museum, Duxford

46 tanks

Muckleburgh Collection, Weybourne

21 tanks

I'll feature more locations when I can but for now I'll like to bring things up to date with the Bovington locations touched on in the Photography thread.

The museum collection itself is huge - I've started on it, but don't expect to finish it completely for many months (so I'll work on it in parallel with other projects). It is now largely complete for the external vehicles, Tank Story Hall and World War I hall. I'll work on the World War 2 hall next when I can find the time (currently it just has old entries, mostly from the Preserved German Tanks books):

Bovington Tank Museum, Wareham

55 tanks so far

Bovington ATDU and Solitary Vehicles, Wareham

6 tanks so far (my thanks go to Adrian Barrell for the Ram pictures, and to Neil and P.-O. who highlighted the locations of a number of these vehicles in the UK AFV Register thread on this forum).

Royal Armoured Corps Gunnery School, East Lulworth

2 tanks so far

Trevor, let me know if you need any extra shot from Bovington. I have a gazillion of them, but they are still all in RAW format.

Maybe I managed to shoot subjects you missed.

BTW I see you list two StuG III over there, are you sure?

Many thanks for the offer. I'll take you up on it, but there's no rush. I'm aiming to finish writing up BRAC/Fort Knox, and to put your Full photo's online first so I won't be able to use them for some months.

I'm pretty sure there have been two as they look very different (e.g. around the driver's visor) - one has been in the museum a long time, and a new Finnish-style one arrived from Parola in 1990. However, the 'old' one may not be there any more - I didn't see there it in 2008. I will investigate it further when I get to that section of my Bovington write-up (for example, it may be the one now at Duxford as it certainly resembles it).

Meanwhile I have finished writing up the tanks around Bovington Camp. I have also dug out and scanned in my old photo's (1980s) of the Conqueror tanks, and added those.

Bovington ATDU and Solitary Vehicles, Wareham

10 tanks - Conqueror at the intersection of Balaclava and Boney Roads shown.

Hi Trevor,

The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst definitely has a Centurion outside the Churchill Hall and I think a 5.5 inch gun.

I know! I have photo's of it from my time there. It is one of many that I haven't yet put online. It's a bit depressing to think of how much work is ahead of me! I keep an informal track of ones not yet done here:

We did a trade two years ago with them, they did get a M108 from us, but maybe they used it to trade it with something else?

Kinda, but I still find the subject fascinating, and get excited when I find new vehicles, so I can't complain!

I believe we discussed this before, but I can't find the thread. I think I suggested that I thought it unlikely the M108 was in central London, rather that it might at their other base in Windsor.

Over the last few days I have been looking into the tanks used as targets at Lulworth, and have so far increased the number tanks identified at Lulworth from 2 to 25:

Royal Armoured Corps Gunnery School, Lulworth Camp

2 x Cent ARV, 7 x Chieftain, 7 x Chieftain AVLB, 7 x Chieftain AVRE

- if anyone can help with photographs it would be much appreciated. Meanwhile I have emailed the authors of various photos found on Flickr.com, Geograph.co.uk and MilitaryPhotos.net in the hope of getting permission to use theirs. I was particularly excited to find the 'Line of target tanks' photos here which I have used to identify a whole bunch of Chieftain AVLBs and AVREs awaiting their fate as targets:

preservedtanks.com/Loc...oryID=3035

It would be great to get some close-up pictures of them, though, to confirm identities and hopefully extract some registration numbers.
