Stoop.... Mechy

Yep agree that FSX is real smooth at low fps.. makes a nice change too !!

not having the disc in the slot shows someone somewhere is applying a little common sense.. so called protection hasn't lasted an hour in the www.

We will all try to crunch the numbers faster as this will allow us to utilise ever increasing levels of complexity whilst keeping a "usable" frame rate whatever the number is.... flyabilty is the key

Yep get rid of the shift+ Z

salute

In the quest for ultimate FPS, bear in mind that you can hardly see anything more than 30 - 35 FPS. So, if you have a rig capable of 100+, have you really accomplished all that much other than benchmark scores?

Ok Stoopy .... there's a new sticky 'Yank Z Key From Keyboard and Just Sit Back And Relax' !!! Smile

What you said is so true about alot of FS X forums, people are spending more time crying about the game then flying it. That's what I always enjoyed about the forums here, more so constructive then destructive.

Two major things I see are, that you can actually fly this sim at low fps and not have the usuall low fps problems and that you don't need to keep the disk in the drive. I don't see anyone, anywhere saying anything about that, to me it's a big deal that we don't have to keep the disk in. Just seems that maybe Microsoft listened alittle bit this time.

...then it finally hit me Shocked .... even though the fps were low, the game was still smooth, had no stutters and looked great. So...after a week or so trying to figure out why the fps were so low, I now just resist the temptation of Shift-z and enjoy the game!

Mechy, I think you are BRILLIANT!!!!

I still only have the demo but the thing about how it just seems smoother at low FPS numbers is true. Lots of people comment on, and notice this...somewhere between the tiring, horrific griping and insults at places like AVSIM....what a shame....

In getting ready for the arrival of the FSX box in the mail, I also tried many of the published tweaks, and then came to the same conclusion as you!

The best tweak is to yank the "Z" key from the keyboard and just sit back and relax....it's an easy and cheap fix, LMAO! Laughing

I wasn't happy when I first fired FS X up either Evil or Very Mad . I just couldn't believe that the fps were so low and I thought I had a good machine (E6600, 2gigs 6700 ram and a 7950). So I tried tweaking this and then that and then this again Rolling Eyes , and then it finally hit me Shocked .... even though the fps were low, the game was still smooth, had no stutters and looked great. So...after a week or so trying to figure out why the fps were so low, I now just resist the temptation of Shift-z and enjoy the game!

Task manager reports about 50% usage when FSX is running, but task manager reports on the cpu performance and not the individual cores.

If you put the graph up showing both cores, you'll notice that one is maxed out at 100% and the other is just at idle.

So for me, FSX is only using one core...50% of the total CPU.

Anyone else's cpu running at less than 100%? (without silly screen resolutions like 2880x1840)

That figure of approx fifty percent is taken from the Asus overclocking and analysis utility and I presume that most people's processor utilization figures are coming from CPU-Z, so maybe that would account for the apparent conflict on our figures, I just don't know. Also my FS X is running under Windows XP 64 professional presumably in its 32 bit emulation mode so maybe that is an issue for processor utilization, I just don't know.

I hear what you're saying,

But everywhere I looked, Avsim etc the general consensus is that CPU the limiting factor. As per my initial findings and indeed as all MS flightsim series has been.

Good luck if yours is limited by the graphics card, But I will reiteratte my warning (to others) that if you shell out big bucks on a Vid card set up you probably will not see the returns you are expecting.

Hi Adrian

Is it possible that your load of 50% is the result of one core running at 100% and the second core at minimal? I believe that FSX only uses one core.

Yes you're right about FS X using only one core, a Microsoft person told me that FS X will not utilize multicore unless it is run in Vista. No, I do not believe that it is what it was saying i.e. giveing a combined figure for the two cores, since there are individual figures for the two cores.

Your FX53
www.xbitlabs.com/artic...x53_2.html

looks quite similar in a number of respects to my

Athlon 64 4800

www.xbitlabs.com/artic...-x2_4.html

just a guess but I would suggest a possability is that the five to ten percent that the second processor is dealing with might have a disproportionate effect when it is dealt with [ combined ] in a single processor situation.

Best Regards

Hi Adrian

Your results seem exactly the opposite of those I found.. My single core CPU (FX53) is running at 100% regardless of settings. Is it possible that your load of 50% is the result of one core running at 100% and the second core at minimal? I believe that FSX only uses one core.

Easy way to check whether the fps are limited by CPU or GPU is wind up your screen res and see if it affects frames, a better way is perhaps increase graphic settings but certain sliders also have a definate loading increase on the CPU, most notably cloud draw distance and autogen..

Certainly on my rig all other sliders can be maxxed at virtually no cost of frames, loading time another story though Laughing

My initial tests seem to support this.

Would be nice to test a 7900 single against a 7950GX2 to see if the program takes advantage of the dual cards.

I am not well up on this stuff but I think what might be getting the good results for you is when you are running one of the single paired cards combi in SLI? that is if FS X does not suppport Quad Sli?

Does anybody know if FS X is a 32 bit or 64 bit programme, I am not writeing this on my home computer but I think my machine which is runing the Windows XP 64 Professional assigned FS X this header

(x86)

which is reserved for 32 bit applications, which suggests to me that Microsoft is overplaying what Vista will do for FS X and did FS X really need Vista to exploit Dual Cores or did MS just decide that would be a nice way of forcing people to acquire Vista?
