Bovington
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Thanks for the info Paul, very useful. I am not worried about light conditions, I can push my camera to ISO 4000 and still get good results. It's now clear to me I have to bring a telephoto lens.

I will be in England next month and may spend a day in Bovington. During my last visit the Tamiya hall was closed, since they were setting up the Afghanistan display. All in all, I have enough excuses to go back Smile

Massimo

PS Thinking about it, the telephoto could be handy in Hendon as well

They are clearing out the British Steel Hall next month in preparation for a new exhibition in there. Mention was made of actually starting the Tortoise up to move it out as its really too heavy for their tractor or even recovery vehicle.

Here's a couple of shots of the Pak43 when it was outside the infantry's heavy weapons wing near Larkhill in the early 1990's.

The VCC is open for viewing from the gallery above the vehicles from 2pm on normal visitor days. This gallery is right over the top of some vehicles in the upper corner of the place. You can see it before they filled the place up in this photo:

On some special events eg Tankfest, Britain at War etc the ground floor is open to the public. Its primarily a storage facility so the vehicles are very close together. They do change them around so it is possible to get a clear view sometimes.

Its quite dark in the VCC so a tripod or alternative is a good idea. I've had success using other vehicles, a shelf running around it or a friend!

Search my photostream for "VCC" Smile

Can somebody please update me on Vehicle Conservation Centre (VCC)? I recall it was possible to visit once a day, during a specific time, without access to the ground floor, only from the public observation gallery. Is it still the case? I failed to find info on the Museum's website.

What about the public observation gallery, how far is from the vehicles? Is a telephoto lens required from there?

Massimo

PS The Museum just got a T-72:

we know Paul a bit, because he posted a lot of nice photos on Flickr (and I use some of them on my websites) :

Well, he takes some mighty fine snaps!

I don't know who Gigi Edgley is, but we may have to open a special forum on that subject. Laughing
