I Need a Tank
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: I Need a Tank

Greetings Gentlemen & Doug Kibbey Wink

I'm wondering if anyone has gone through the process of acquiring a tank to be used as a public monument? Here's what I'm thinking: I live in Beatty, Nevada which is right next to the Nellis AFB bombing range. I'm pretty certain that they have M60A3's that are going to be used as targets. I am interested in acquiring one to be used as a veteran's monument at a local park. If I can get the Nellis commander on board with the idea then what would I need to do? I'm pretty sure TACOM would be involved but I don't know. We have a small, new park here on US95 that basically has nothing in it yet. So I'm thinking about attempting this. There are other vets here who I think will help. If we do it then Joe D can come out and help paint it Smile Any suggestions? Thanks!

A couple suggestions; try the local National Guard. In Nebraska about 90% of the tanks and guns on display came via the ArNG and the ANG donated a number of planes. When the Nebraska Guard deactivated the 1/195 Armor the M60A3s were offered out to various communities. Sometimes the tanks were moved by the Guard as part of training.

I'm not sure about contacting the US Army's Center for Military History, but technically they have title to ALL the Army equipment on display in parks, etc in the USA (even though they don't know what they have title to or where it all is).

Thirdly, one could try writing to your local Congressman. If you can get him or her interested then their letter to the Dept of the Army is more likely to get a quick and polite response than yours or mine.

Gary B.

Thanks for the ideas, Gary. Las Vegas has a tank unit. I can contact them (1/221 Cav). Never thought about a congressman (or woman). They could pull some strings for me. Maybe even show up for a ribbon cutting (except Harry Reid. Don't want him in my town!). I could just write my congesswoman and let them do all the phone calls! With an election coming up I'm sure they'd help.

Mark,

I have copies of the paperwork used to request "A Tank" by private organizations from TACOM and also the Army Regulation that covers it. I can e-mail what I have if you want it.
