Essentially it discusses the P-38K and the rumor about there having been a Merlin-powered P-38 Lightning that was tried out in testing once. I'd read this rumor in another book and it sounded enticing, but this seems to put the rumor to rest and also makes some very interesting points about the Allison V-12's and some of the actual benefits associated with that mill. Kind of nice to read something that vindicates the Allisons after the beating their reputation got, especially in constant comparisons to the Merlin.

As for the closing argument that the War Dept. somehow made a bad judgement call and should answer to it, I don't buy it, personally. From all the reading I've done, there was such HUGE demand and outcry for P-38's during the war, due to their all-around flexibility, and being pretty much the only real long-range escort fighter before the P-51 was available in plentiful supply, that even a 2-3 week delay in production would have cost more lives than this author thinks would have been saved.....he's thinking about the P-38 pilots only, not the grunts on the ground needing air support or bomber crews who needed every little friend they could get.

Anyway, some interesting trivia about a couple details of a great plane.
