M4 76mm Sherman or not? That is the question
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: M4 76mm Sherman or not? That is the question

I was under the impression that there were no M4 76mm Shermans in the ETO during WWII (just A1, A2,A3...).
I recently picked up Concord publications "The Sherman at War" by S.Zaloga Volume 2 - The US Army in the ET 1943-45.
On pages 54, 55, 56 and 61 the captions for some pictures of 76mm Shermans state "M4 (76)". Are these just typos or were there really M4 76mm Shermans in the ETO?
All views are frontal or side and as far as I know you can't distinguish an M4 from an M4A3 except for the deck and rear... but I'm no expert.

Hi
There was no M4 76mm, just A1-A2-A3
Steven Zaloga wrote somewhere that he uses the short M4 when he cannot state the exact variant - even though in that case the variant is obvious because the M4A2 76 all went to the USSR during WW2

Thanks for the confirmation.
Would be much less confusing if maybe he used the generic term "Sherman" instead of "M4" in cases where it wasn't clear.
Although he is probably trying to avoid using the term Sherman as it was the British designation and this volume covers American tanks.

That's true
I think most American users only saw them as 'M4s' at the time and 'Sherman' was probably unheard in US units

Keep in mind that by the time the 76 was going into the "M4" variants the specific M4A0 would have had the late war improvements and would have a composite hull and would thus be recognizable as such. The M4 late war is very distinct from the M4A3 (75 and 76mm) late war variants. (no M4 76mm variants to be confused with the M4A3 76mm)
