New info on Sheridan/Shillelagh Photo
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: New info on Sheridan/Shillelagh Photo

"Well, I just had to come back to this picture to make a correction of my own previous correction. I have this picture on my computer as my screensaver and every time I look at it something tells me something isn't right. Then one day I looked at the surroundings of the vehicle and realized my mistake on my earlier correction. The shot was made at Fort Knox in the time frame I said, but, the shot was made on Rolling Forks Tank Range. My old memory went into over drive and now I remember the details. The vehicle was dropped that day on Rolling Forks and we stayed there that day doing the firing and VIP visitor thing. Then we set up for the night shooting. I did the night shots as well as the day shots and in this particular shot I was firing my first missile shot at night. 1LT Faulkner loaded the bird SSG Dan Cisco was TC, SSG Andy Grizzle was in the driver's seat and I the gunner. Dan Cisco and Andy Grizzle both retired from the Army and both live in Radcliff KY. Sorry for the wrong info 1st time around but now it IS correct."

Why are there two flags up? I see the red flak, but is that a blue next to it? Something to due to the missile?

Dan, I noticed that too. The flags are from day firing and should have been removed. You will note a red light by the base of the flag. That indicates live firing.

Dan,

I think that's a green flag, not blue.

Red = Armed weapons/ Laser.

Yellow = Malfunction with system, FCS or weapon.

Green = Weapons clear/ Laser in Safe

The combination's of flags can mean different things too.

Red and Yellow = Malfunction, weapons/ laser are armed.

Green and Yellow = Malfunction, weapons/ laser are cleared/safe.

Not sure why they are displaying a Green and Red together, unless they are signifying the the systems are good and they are armed. A single Red would suffice. Some places we did away with all flags/ lights in the name of being Tactical. All depends on the Local Unit and Range SOP's. Personally I agreed with that policy. TC controls the tank and it's his ass if he fails to keep the Tower/C92/Black6 or whatever they are calling it now informed.

Joe, Red & Green was a special M551 signal. It meant weapons loaded but probably won't fire! Shocked

Guys, I'm a old Tanker myself and should have said something in my post about that-I just wondered if it had something to do with the missile-the flag really looks to be blue to me! Back in the day I heard "intresting" stories from about missile firing from the '551 and 'A2's and thought the flag had something to do with that.

When I was on Sheridans we used the same flag signals for missiles as we did conventional. I fired a missile at Graf once and it came out of the tube and went straight up. I didn't see it but the TC told me about it. He never did see it come down. So they gave us a second missile. It sailed right through turret ring of a moving target 3,000 meters away! I think that was on Range 80.
