Neil - Gastonia, NC & Gaffney, SC M114s
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Made an AFV run from Charlotte, NC on 6/28/10.

Photos of the M114s from:

VFW Post 9337, 3250 W Franklin Blvd, Gastonia, NC. (#391 below rear left tow lug.)

VFW Post 3447, 1100 S Granard St, Gaffney, SC. (#575 below rear left tow lug.)

While using GMaps to track down the Gaffney VFW I stumbled across:
Cherokee County Veterans Museum. 200 S Logan ST Gaffney, SC 29340

We stopped by and they have a static display of a Vietnam vet UH-1 Huey, a T-37 Tweet, and a WW2 jeep outside the museum. The museum is open only on weekends, so we were standing outside the fence, framing photos through the barbed wire atop the chain link, when a man driving by stopped his car and offered to let us in!
Turns out he is the Veterans Affairs Officer for Cherokee County, SC as well as, I believe, runs the museum!

Next thing we know - we're inside the fence snapping away and even got a quick tour of the museum. Lots of GREAT stuff inside from US civil war up to modern times - all acquired from the veterans of this ONE county. It's really worth a visit if you're in the area.

Cheers,
VB

Utterly unAFV related.

What would a county's responsibilities be toward veterans? These men and women have federal and state service, not municipal. So what programs or services would the lowest level of government have to offer?

VB,
BTW, we have determined that the "SN"s on the rear of M114s below the tow lugs are bogus. They dont match up to the SNs on the dataplates inside. The M114 is one the few US AFVs you cant get the SN from externally. However, on some models you can get the RN stamped on the front of the hull - near the headlights if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the info Neil.

I guess I'll start lugging around an acetyline torch or some shaped charges to get inside and grab the data plate info!!

It's not like I don't get into enough trouble already!

RE: MAPLE_LEAF_EH:

I imagine the VAO is a Federal position - probably the geographic areas of responsibility are broken down to county levels. BUT as I don't really know - there you go. LOL!
