Data plates on Soviet tanks?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Data plates on Soviet tanks?

Quick question. Where would one look for the data plates on Soviet tanks and armoured vehicles?

Good question...

I have looked thru a couple of T72s that used to be here at the Patton Museum but never found anything. I figured they may have been removed back during ODS when they were captured.

The stamped SN is generally located on the front slope.

The only data plates I've ever found in T72 were on the turret on the gun mount (Turret left side/gunners position)

Of course this was an export tank, so perhaps none was mounted when shipped to the client (Iraq).

Unfortunately I never looked for the data plates in the MTLB, BRDM 2, BMPs, T55 or T34/85 we had here. I was so wrapped up in exploring the prototype heavy tanks & experimental stuff, I never got to the Russian stuff, before they all started leaving.

Regards
Don

Hello Sarge,

T-72

T-34 in the Munster museum

T-54

Hope this helps.
Never seen dataplates on Soviet tanks in the way they are on Western tanks such as Leopard and US built tanks. On Soviet aircraft (off topic, I know) it was just painted in the wheelbay or a small metal plate with just the serial.

Regards,
lesley
