Post subject: M74 medium tank recovery vehicle

Hi Folks!

I have surfing around the internet looking for some information on the number of M74s that where build.

I have found that the Bowen McLaughlin-York plant converted M4A3 tanks into M74s during February 1954 to October 1955.

I have found that Rock Island Arsenal converted 60 M32B3s into M74s during late 1958.

So far, 60 is the only number I have been able to find. Would any of you folks know of a wed site where I can find the number of converions done by Bowen McLaughlin-York?

Thanks everyone!

I have notes from a 1953 OCM that 650 M74s were recommended, but that was published before the vehicle was even officially standardized, so it is doubtful that this was the final number.

I contacted BMY several years ago and they regretted that they don't have anything records-wise.

Those RIA units are interesting, as they are M74B1s - M74s made from small hatch M4A3s. Hunnicutt lists them as "scheduled", but I've never seen a photo of one.

Hi Kurt! Hi Folks!

I guess BMY's lack of records is why Hunnicutt didn't list any production numbers. Odd that he would have the dates production started and stopped. (Page 478)

"Scheduled"! I totality missed that and jumped to the conclusion he was talking about production numbers completed.

Once more the Sherman has confused me!

Thanks Kurt!

I saw on the NAPCO International website that one of the vehicles they support is the M74. I wonder if they ever ran across a small hatch one that they rebuilt. They also re-engined the M32s for the Mexican Army as late as 1998.
