Outstandingly Effective and Ineffective Infantry Weapons
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Outstandingly Effective and Ineffective Infantry Weapons

There is a book that came out recently called “Canadians Under Fire; Infantry Effectiveness in the Second World War” by Robert Engen. The book is based on an analysis of Battle Experience Questionnaires completed by Canadian Infantry Officers.

The section of the questionnaires dealing with weapons is interesting. After asking which weapons were used by the officers’ unit it asks:

“Have you found any of these weapons outstandingly effective?”

and

“Have you found any of these weapons ineffective?”

Which were the top four weapons rated “outstandingly effective” and the bottom four rated “ineffective”?

The weapon found “outstandingly effective” by the greatest number of officers on the questionnaire was the P.I.A.T., followed by the bren gun, the 3in mortar and the No. 36 grenade.

The “ineffective” weapon identified by the greatest number of officers was the Sten SMG., followed by the pistol, the 2in mortar and the No. 69 grenade.
