Tank Hunting Adventures
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Tank Hunting Adventures

In addition to the Ohio tanks I commented on previously, I also visted these buggers. I got home at 0245 this morning, so details will follow as I catch up with home stuff and examine the photos. Consider the info below as tentative.

Ropkey Museum, Crawfordsville IN

M4A3(105) HVSS, South Holland IL - I read _3235 off the tow lugs, and looking at the ranges I'm betting that the first digit is 7.

M5, Oak Lawn IL - SN 836 with correct RN 3044270 painted on.

Cantigny Estate, Wheaton IL

M4A1(76) HVSS, Griffith IN - BN 1-1403.

M4A1(76) HVSS, Crown Point IN - BN 1-321.

M60A3, Lowell IN - SN 2466A, confirmed.

Fowler IN - A brief drive through town found a WW I German gun at a veteran's hall (put their in 1936) but no tank. Still a ?

M3A3 light tank, Hoopeston IL – SN 12237. This is in the cemetery north of town. I searched for “army tank hoopeston illinois” on Google and found a blog entry mentioning “driving past the old silver army tank at the cemetery” on the way to visit a relative’s grave. Sure enough, there it was.

M4A1(76) HVSS, Attica IN – BN 1-1065.

M4A1(76) HVSS, Brazil IN – BN 1-1429.

M60, Bedford IN – SN 1780 as noted.

M4A1(76) HVSS, Brownstown IN – BN 1-1464. If this is a good match with the production sequence, this would be the next-to-last Sherman built. Ever.

M60, Seymour IN – SN 1446, confirmed.

M4A1(76) HVSS, Scottsburg IN – BN still buried under paint, but it is an earlier production vehicle.

M48x, Milan IN – SN 8980, does not match TACOM register.

I know someone who owns the manufacturers plate of SN 73836 (M4A1 76mm HVSS). I presume that this tank is preserved at Saumur, and will try to get the BN next time I go there. The tank at Saumur doesn't have the armour on air filters, but seems to have weldings for the hinges (have to check), so I guess that the armour plates were removed..

Kurt - we stopped by in June of 2013 and can confirm the first digit of the SN IS a 7. SN 73235. Hard as heck to get a decent photo of the entire SN on the rear lugs. Mrs VB and I were crawling around, dodging hornets - would have made a hilarious video!
