Question is, what can I do with it other than fly online again, which I can do also with other means. And it is not clear if my addons can be used...

Hey Gunter I did a bit of reading and it does say "compatible with existing addons" I am going to get it and see if this is true or not, I will let you know.

What is the significance of the "Steam" addition as compared to the original? (Gold with expansion pack).

Steam edition is equivalent to X +sp 1 + sp2 +acceleration with all known updates from MS, HTH
