Post subject: US Navy Museum, DC Gallery - Railway Gun

Hi All,

We’ve added a gallery of photos from the US Navy Museum in Washington, DC. While the museum focus is primarily on other aspects of the US Navy, they do have a huge railway gun on display that I thought might interest you artillery folks. It is SO huge that getting a decent photo is tricky!

Love railway guns, thanks for posting.

That bathyscaphe, the real "Trieste"?

Yes, Massimo it is the real "Trieste." Very cool to see in person. The museum has the original capsule on display as well.

Getting on base involves getting a visitor pass but it very worth it.

Entry on foot is done with little difficulty, but if you are mobility challenged and need to use a car to get to the old Gun Factory (the center of the museum area), make sure that you have your car's registration document when you go into apply.

We were living in Texas at the time, and Texas is one of the states that doesn't require that the registration document be in the car. No registration = no admittance, no exceptions, sorry.

It didn't help that, on the day of our visit, the whole area was consumed in some sort of gridlock, making the trip in and out an ordeal in the bargain...

All of that said, the museum and grounds are worth a visit. Nice bookshop the last time we visited, and where else do you get to see a toilet recovered from a sunken enemy warship?

Interesting array of displays. The orange "plane" is a Japanese Yokosuka MXY7 Ohka K1, the trainer version, which is why it's got a landing skid.
The railway gun is a WW1 era 14", en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...ilway_gun.
