Post subject: Buried Iraqi Jet

[img][/img][img][/img][img][/img][img][/img]
I found this series of pictures of a buried Iraqi jet being unearthed and recovered by U.S. forces. The picture seems to be recent since the desert uniforms are three color (coffee stain) instead of the 6 color (chocolate chip) used during Desert Storm. Any ideas as to what kind of MIG this is? I don't know my foriegn jets, I'm an Infantry Mortarman by trade and know my Infantry toys pretty well and more recently, armor in general.

~S~ All
Seems that allot of nice old aircraft are comeing out of Iraq and Afganistan since the war.
I just read an article in the dec 2004 issue of Flight Journal mag that three Hawker Fury airframes were recoverd from a dump, one being a rare T.20 two seat trainer, which now holds the honor of being the only known survivor of it's type.
From an article fm Aeroplane mag half a dozen Hawker Hinds were found in a scrapyard in Kabul, and as of late 2004 were still there.
There is no telling what will be found in the future.

Hi Jeff! Hi Folks!

I remember hearing that an Australian Special Forces type unit was tasked to check out an abandoned airbase in western Iraq. After being in the area for a few days and a couple of wind storms, they notice some aircraft rudders sticking up out of the sand. After major combat operations ended, a US military unit was sent over to dig the aircraft out. They found a number of planes. One thing that was done wrong was who ever buried the aircraft, failed to fill in the area under the wings. On a number of the aircraft, the wings had broken due to the weight of the sand on top of them.

If they buried complete aircraft, what else did they bury and were?
One thing is for sure, somebody burned a lot of ammo all over the place.

Sgt, Scouts Out!
