Fort Irwins T-72 Tank photo's...
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Yesterday someone asked about a T62 that was here at Ft Irwin. This is the only Soviet tank I know about on post, a T-72. It sits in front of the 1/11th ACR Squadron HQ's. Included are front and rear pictures as well as a shot of the rear, which appears to have some brackets cut off,(original fuel tank brackets?). Then there are two shots of stamped numbers on the front and rear hull areas. Front hull had R03BT4620, and the rear hull had R02BT8483. I thought it might be unsecure but my 11 year old son, Jeffrey climbed up and said it was secure. That is my other son, 6 year old Morgan posing with the tank. I don't know much about Soviet equipment so anything out of the common is unknown to me other than the fake fuel tanks on the rear, (55 gal drums).

Thank you very much!!!! This is exactly the info I needed. The ''mirrored'' R is cyrillig for ''Ja'', indicating that it is built in 1981. ''BT'' is cyrillic for WT, so the constructionnumber is in latin ''Ja03WT4620''. There must be other info in the c/n, such as factory and month of production, but I still try to figure that out by the Russian built tanks....

It is one of the oldest T-72 c/n's I have.

It raises also a question, the number on the back..... I never seen this on the east german examples here at monuments or in use as range targets. I will try to find out and will let you know

Thank you very much!!!!
Regards,
Lesley

Outstanding information!!! I just called the museum about these Soviet pieces and it seems they used to belong to an MI unit that is no longer here and now they are to become part of the museums collection. Any further information would be greatly appriciated on the T72 or the BMP. If you can figure them out, I will also take pictures of and get the stampings off the other BMP.

Are there any sources to "decode" Soviet equipment. I would like to be able to leave the museum here with as much info on it and the two BMP's as possible.

Hello Jeff,

www.militaertechnik-der-nva.de/

Go to ''Inhalte'' and then to '' fahrgestellnummern der NVA-technik

Then you come into a page with letter / number combinations of Polish, Czech, Bulgarian and Russian letter combinations of tanks. Scroll further down and you will see kampfpanzer (tanks) Schutzenpanzer (IFV's) etc.

Hope this helps,
Regards,
Lesley
