Hungarian Army circa '44-'45/Seige of Budapest?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

I attempted a few Google searches with little success to see what I could come up with regarding the Hungarian Army's uniforms and equipment circa 1944-45 during the seige of Budapest. Does anyone have any info? I'm aware of the rather expensive Axis-Europe volumes on the Royal Hungarian Army, but their prices put them out of reach for me at present. Thanksin advance for any suggestions.

Hi Blackjack! Check out this thread on the Axis History Forum:

forum.axishistory.com/...n+uniforms

Do a search and you'll find other threads.

For a good book from the Hungarian viewpoint of the Battle of Budapest, try to buy Krisztian Ungvary's "The Battle for Budapest".

Best Regards,
David

Thanks David. If the Battle of Budapest is the same as Seige of Budapest then I'm in for a good read soon as I asked my local library to reserve a copy for me which I should get soon. Thanks for the link as well. Might be a good read after reading Norman Davies Uprising '44 about the Warsaw Uprising and Anthony Beevor's Berlin 1945.

Hi Blackjack! "Seige of Budapest" is a different book, it's by James Lucas but Ungvary wrote the Forward. I haven't read Lucas' book, but I tend to like him as a writer. IMHO, Ungvary's book drags a little in spots, primarily because it was written for a Hungarian audience and doesn't concentrate much on the German units involved. But it can't be beat for telling the story from the Hungarian side.

I was drawn to it because among the units cut off in Budapest was an Hungarian armored unit armed with Zrinyi assault guns, one of my pet obscure armored vehicles in WWII.

Best Regards,
David

If you are really cheap, but a member in good standing at your local library, do an Interlibrary Loan of the best books. Pay the shipping charges, read cover to cover and make colour photocopies of everything you think might be needed later on.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the book is put out by a small publisher, and although the Library of Congress has two copies, they're not lending it out. I searched interlibrary loan for other libraries that may have it but it being from a small publisher and the subject matter don't seem to help things.

Where was the picture taken? It looks an awful lot like the Italian Semovente SP gun.

Looks like Kubinka judging from the green.

It does look very like Kubinka. And now that I look at my copy of the catalog I find and entry for a 105mm self propelled gun built on the Turan chassis in 1942, identified as "40/43M Erini"

Thanks!!

The Italians had an active Military Advisory Mission in Hungary during the war, I've always thought that had something to do with the Zrinyi's similarity to the Semovente. Only about 62 Zrinyis were actually prduced, but they did see battle against the Soviets and Rumanians.

Best,
David

David -
Interesting about the Italians being in Hungary, I didn't know that - of course, I suspect that there's also some simple engineering convergence going on here. You give different engineers the same kind of problem and the answers are going to look pretty much alike. There's a certain general similarity to the German selfpropelled guns as well.

The Italians were very influential in the Hungarian military during the war. The first AFV's purchased by the Hungarian Army were L3/33 tankettes. Likewise, the Hungarian Air Force used largely Italian aircraft at the start of the war, Fiat CR.32 and CR.42 fighters, Caproni Ca.135 bombers. The wartime Hungarian-built Heja fighter was a license built derivative of the Italian Re.2000 fighter.
