Question for Bob Smart
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Bob,
Did you ever get back to that straight M60 at Thurmont MD? I am very curious to know what the serial number is on it. I believe it's on of the first 15 made with the too thin armor.

Joe D ?
I haven't had a chance to run up there yet. I'll try and move it up on the priority list. My wife has been wanting to go to the outlets up in Gettysburg and Thurmont is right on the way Smile

Bob,
Hey, letting the Wife spend money at an outlet mall is a great way to convince her to make a small detour. Mine wouldn't go for it so I'm usually solo on my expeditions. Here's what I noticed on this tank.

Very early style turret with lifting eyes reversed, one in front, two at rear (Red Circles), like M48 turret.

Rangefinder armored cover on left is either on backward (Most likely) or there's no rangefinder (Yellow Circle).

Has been upgraded with top loading armored air filter housings (Yellow Arrow).

Searchlight stowage brackets have been removed/cut off (Black Arrow).

I've pasted in examples of where to find the Serial number. Top is left front hull tow eye. Bottom is left rear hull where the deck mates up. The examples are of a tank made at the Newark Delaware plant (One of 360) before the production was moved to detroit. The serial number would answer a lot. Any more pictures would definately help.

Thanks,
Joe D

I've got some more pictures including one that you can read the registration number on. Thinking about it I might have a tow lug serial number. They were taken right after i got the digital camera and I was still learning how to use it so a few didn't come out well. Let me check at home tonight

I looked at my pictures. The registration is 9B3096. I have a front tow lug but the number I got was cast in the side of it so I suspect that it isn't the Serial Number but it is 5787.

Hello gents, these pictures show the M60A3 at the Barstow, CA., vets home. The stamped serial numbers should look similar to these, as far as location of the stampings. Hope this helps.
