One heck of a kit review on Academy's Sheridan
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: One heck of a kit review on Academy's Sheridan

Hi Folks!

I was checking out Terry Ashley's Perth Military Modelling Site (PMMS) for "Whatnew?" and "New Kit" pages.

On the "Whatnew?" page is a review for Friulmodel 1/35 scale track block for Sheridan. Interesting, but what I found in that review was very interesting. In the last sentence before the Refernces section was a link to a review by 'Vodnik'.

What I found was a review where Vodnik took photos of the model kit and matching photos of a real vehicle so you could see the differentices that he was reporting on.

I think that is a super way to do a kit review. To bad all kit reviews can not be done that way. If they could, I bet we would start getting more accurate kits.

Also, under the Academy's new kits page, Terry is reporting a M3 Lee kit due soon.

Spot Report!

Hi Roy! Ouch! That's a harsh review by Vodnik! Essentially he's saying that the ancient Tamiya kit had less mistakes in it! Ouch again! And that the guy who drew the boxart should have designed the kit instead of the design team! Triple ouch!

Odd that Academy's ACAV is really good and their Sheridan receieves such bad reviews.

Best,
David

Hi David! Hi Folks!

Mr. Vodnik set a new standard for doing kit reviews.

I understood the Academy kit had a few problems, Confused but if I had read his review and saw those photos first, I would have NEVER Evil or Very Mad have bought the Academy kit. I am not a nut and bolt counting type builder Neutral , but I already have two Tamiya kits which almost look like a Sheridan. Sad

It's like Academy took a major step backwards.

I have seen something pretty similar - pics of Trumpeter SAM-6 (left side of hull with wheels "on") confronted with the picture of a real vehicle...
Not only the missile is undersized (in diameter), but the side access hatches on the sidewalls are a bit "offside" too, there are some bad angles on fron of the vehicle etc.
It still looks like a SAM-6 but for "nut counters" it could be a mistake "hardly to be repaired".

How does the Tamiya ACAV measure up against the Academy ACAV ? Have picked up the Academy ACAV - been eyeing the Tammy ACAV as it has a 1/35 RPG-7 IIRC .

I take it that the Tamiya kit is a bit older than the Academy ACAV (Correct me if I'm wrong !)

Thanks in advance

The Tamiya kit came out in the mid 80s but was basically a straight rebox of their 70s era M113 with a sprue tossed in with the figures, gun shields and accessories. Not bad for it's time, but the kit represented a gasoline powered M113 and not a diesel powered M113A1 that was common in Vietnam.

The Academy ACAV is a true M113A1 and can even be built into a modern M113A2 and gives various turret options like the twin .30 cals or M123 flame turret. The Academy kit does have striking similarities to the Tamiya kit in several areas. Most likely because it was developed when Academy copied many of Tamiya's kits for their own line.

Incidentily, the Tamiya M113A2 "Desertised" is basically the same original M113 kit with new sprues that make it look cosmetically like an M113A3 (as pictured on the boxtop). They missed many features though. The OIF accessories are very good and if added to the Academy M113A1/A2 kit, would make a very nice modern M113A3.
