3D "virtual" model of M113 ACAV. Hi res...(Hi bucks, too)
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

This kind of thing can be very handy for modelers, gamers, illustrations, stuff like that.

Hi Ascout! Hi Folks!

I would agree with gamers and illustrations, but NOT modelers.

To many small errors. Clearly done by someone who has never done much around the real thing. The reason I think that is the spare track block laying on the front of the vehicle. The M113 FOVs uses a live track, for a section to lay down like that, just about all the links would have to be way passed dead. Second, very little would stay in that area of the hull when the vehicle started moving around. In a number of shots, all kinds of gear or equipment is just laying on top the surf board or front edge of the top of the hull.

Very interesting site, thanks for the link Ascout!
My 2 cents on CGI M113s.

I was looking at the other models on the site and it made me think of a question I'v always wanted to ask of our esteemed members ( including Roy Lingle...JK)

Under the main gun on the front of the M1 turret, wouldn't that downward sloped area (above the driver's hatch) be a be a shot trap? Wouldn't it deflect a round down into the top of the hull?

The way I understand it, NO. Deflection is how you stop a HVAP arrow from going through. Deflecting the arrow causes it to lose mass behind the point and tear itself apart.

Solid armor does cause shot traps, however modern LAYERED armor doesn't.

The fuel can on the front is right where we mounted our "D" handle shovel. Fuel cans went on the rear of the vehicle. As far as the "lose" track draped on the front of the vehicle, you just dont throw track away into the woods when you repair thrown track in the field, (although I've seen it done). Of course I'm talking current day, I can't speak for the Viet-Nam era.
As far as all sort of gear laying all over the track/ surf-board area, that would depend on whether you were mobile or in a FOB. Is your squad a bunch of slobs with weak leadership?, or do you run a tight ship and have leadership that doesn't allow crap to be laying around all over your track? Are load plans followed?, etc... My two cent worth, haha.
