Post subject: FS2004 Royal Navy Westland Wessex

FS2004 Royal Navy Westland Wessex.

The Westland Wessex was the first British helicopter to have a gas turbine engine and was in the early 1960s adapted for the Royal Navy to carry out a fleet utility, troop carrier and anti-submarine roles.
The HAS.1 first flew in 1961. The Wessex is presented in the Mk1, HU5 and HAS.3 versions and was designed for FS2004 by Simshed using FSDS 2 by Brian Franklin.
Gauges were made by Jim Cooper.
Thanks go to Antti Pankkonen and Arne Bartels for the use of their autopilot and hover gauges and also to Rick Piper for his work on the rotors.

They are somewhat wrong on that, in that the Westland Whirlwind predates the Wessex and had a gas turbine allthough as an afterfit.

Well basically they are right, first production British gas turbine helicopter. The mountain resue teams liked them more than the Sea King as they were less bulky in narrow confined areas than the sea king.

This is my favourite British helicopter

Westland wasp

It was brought back into full operational service when war with Argentina broke out in 1982 after the latter had invaded and then occupied the Falkland Islands. Seven reserve frigates and their helicopters were recommissioned for active service in the South Atlantic. During the conflict, a Wasp, operating from HMS Endurance, the Antarctic patrol ship, launched a number of torpedoes which homed in on and damaged the Argentine submarine Santa Fe, which posed a potential risk to the British Task Force that was steaming towards the Falkland Islands. The submarine was later run aground by her crew due to the damage she had sustained, thus becoming the first casualty of the sea war, as well as the first direct engagement by the Royal Navy Task Force.
