It's been a long time since we had one of these....
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

...the obligatory updated "Haunted Tank" thread!

Yes, it's finally made "Wikipedia"!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...unted_Tank

Some memories...

www3.telus.net/public/...20Tank.htm

www.forbiddenplanet.co...2018a01b89

"One of the most unusual concepts in war comics gets the Showcase treatment in this volume collecting stories from G.I. Combat issues #87-119, Brave and the Bold #52 and Our Army at War #155. "

The first 33 issues were reissued and I don't have a copy! And somebody made game based on the comic!:

I'll weigh-in on this one.....

I had a complete collection from about 1968 until 1976 (or so...). My favorites were:
Haunted Tank ( GI Combat )
Sgt Fury and Sgt Rock
Weird War AND The Unknown Soldier

Lost my 'Library' somewhere along the road of life... Shocked

But happen to see a couple of familiar covers at a comic shop, so picked them up. (several years ago.)

Regards,
Don

I remember a model being offered of the TRUE cannibalized 'Haunted Tank'.

Guess I need to check out EBAY for that. Anyone remember that vehicle?

Collector's edition misprint, never hit the stands. Check eBay for this baby!

Gotta love the Joe Kubert artwork. Wonder what tank that is, sort of like an M41?

It's laying around my files somewhere, but in issues later than I was reading it, they apparently abandoned the gen-u-ine Stuart for some kind of cobbled together hybrid thingy made of T-34 bits, a 90mm gun from maybe a Persing and some other stuff. I've got a comic diagramatic around from one of those issues that I posted on the old board once...maybe someone else will find it by the time I get back.

No wonder they were deperate for "tank parts"! Laughing

Here is something a little more up-to-date, in fact so up-to-date it is not available yet!

charliefoxtrotfilms.com/comic.php

These guys are also going to be making a movie about this battle in Mosul. Dale Dye is involved in the project, so I am hopeful it will be a good one. Colby Buzzell, who wrote the book Killing Time In Iraq, participated in this battle as well.

If my memory serves me they installed a 76.2 mm cannon in the "original" Haunted Tank, but it was mostly built out of the artist's head from comic to comic. In some it closely resembles a slab-turret Pershing, in others an M-41 (which was the model I used to proxy it in all of my sandbox and basement tank battles) and/or a T-34. The construction of the junk pile tank took about one page and showed the crew just dropping in parts, as if the different modules (gun system, engine, turret, and hull) would just fit together AS IF BY MAGIC accompanied by lines like "This 76.2mm cannon will even the odds!" "These engines will give it plenty of power and speed!" They also had a 20mm cannon in a front glacis mount, although it was also a machine gun at times.

I lost touch with the boys for a while but they apparently went through a Sherman and a Pershing, eventually returning to the Stuart. One memorable battle was a running firefight with a German railway gun which had the Leopold pivoting off-center of the carriage to blast away at the M-3 WHILE STILL MOVING, but the heroes prevailed.

The series ended badly, fighting circus apes, demons and whatnot, but they started my interest in tanks.

"Mmmmmm! Monkeys."

Almost as good fun as the offshore monkey knifefights (as per The Simpsons).

That's beautiful. Makes me look over my old kit box to see if there's a T34 lying around....

"Modified T34 Hull" indeed. With the innovative front toothed drive sprocket...bet that took the boys some work out in the field (along with eliminating that pesky 5th "bogey wheel"). I'd sure like to get a look inside those "tool boxes"!

Yep,

seems like somebody mated the M56 SPAT and an M41, with a minute sprinkling of T-34 for some added flavor. Laughing

Cheers,

I'd love to cobble one of those together. Thanks for posting that page, it is worth the trip down memory lane!
