Squadron Signal In Action books vs. Schiffer ?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Squadron Signal In Action books vs. Schiffer ?

Recently acquired the Squadron Signal 'In Action' series on German WWII Armour - ordered the Sd Kfz 251 book a couple of days ago.

This will complete my German AFV 'In Action' collection.

Apart from different photographs , any significant difference between the Squadron Signal and Schiffer soft cover series on WWII German tanks ?

Thanks in advance

Dirk

Hi Dirk! Hi Folks!

Sorry Dirk, I can not help you with this one. I have many of the Squadron books, possible because they were available in the local book stories and not that costly, but I only have a few of the LARGER Schiffer books which I ordered via the internet.

Hi Dirk,

I have mostly the Squadron/Signal books with just a few of the Schiffer titles, and have these thoughts:

1. The S/S books seem to be better value: better artwork, more text, sharper photographs. The accuracy of what the author writes varies with the author, however. Some are so bad the book has value only for the photos.

2. The Schiffer books seem to have more of the rare and unusual photos not seen anywhere else, but these are not always of the quality one would like, since, apparently, they were taken during the press of combat.

If I were building a model and wanted to super-detail it (such as the Heinkel He 162 pictured) I'd acquire books on this aircraft from both publishers for the best possible coverage and reference.

I agree completely with Bob.
I have most of the S/S books but only a few of the Schiffer issues. I found that the Schiffer differed greatly depending upon the author and I was not keen on the photo reproduction.

Schiffer are the only game in town for some vehicles though and often have interesting photos. Too bad they are hit or miss.

I'd check the specific issue you are contemplating before purchase.

FWIW
Bruce

Thanks for the replies - greatly appreciated.

Sadly have been concentrating on my CD collection and not my WWII book collection
